I want to say thanks to each and every one of you for your awesome responses. Before we went to bed last night, Ash and I read these together and many put smiles on our faces. It is good to see so many other people who care about animals as much as we do.

So thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Like I wrote last night, you all are my CF family. We have a pretty cool online community here. You all are awesome.

So sorry for your loss. Reading your story brought back the emotions of putting our 13 year old Vizsla down 2 years ago. This was the dog that my wife and I had before we had kids, so I know the feeling of having a dog be your first "kid" so to speak. This dog was everything to us, and it was very difficult letting her go. I remember reading about you getting your dog Paisley, as it was only about a month after we had to put our dog down. We had just gotten our new Vizsla puppy, who just turned 2 in March. I always followed and enjoyed your stories of Paisley as our dogs were the same age. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

Dogs like Paisley are so special. Just to sense someone is struggling and comfort them, even a complete stranger. I went through a rough event 2 years ago and struggled through some PTSD and nightmares at night. Normally my dog (a morkie) would sleep in my parents bed but after my event, he could some how hear me struggling in the basement, and would go down there to get in my bed to comfort me. And it meant the world to me. There were times I didn't want to be around people that would ask questions or give words of advice/comfort, I just wanted to sit in my room with my dog. They don't talk, but they listen and love you. A lot of how dogs act is picked from their owners, so you and your wife obviously did a fantastic job caring for not just Paisley, but others as well. Thoughts and prayers to your family

I just noticed this due to twitter. I know you are sad as hell but I really respect your perspective through your loss. I lost a dog to a car probably 20 years ago and I know exactly how you feel. Time will heal and the memories will make you smile.

Sorry for your loss, Chris. It's been 3.5 years since I had to put our black lab to sleep and 4.5 years after I came home to find her sister dead, and I still think about them every day (looking at their picture right now). I am looking forward to next spring when it will finally be time to bring some more Labs into our home.

With Ashley being a vet, this is probably very familiar to her, but thought I'd share it anyway. Gave me some comfort when someone sent it to me after our dogs passed. I hope it brings you comfort, too:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear about that Chris. Putting your dog down is an incredibly tough thing to do. Just remember her pain is over and she in a better place

My condolences to you and Ashley on your loss, Chris.

I remember losing my mom to cancer, then the dog and both cats, all in quick succession. I wasn't at home in Muscatine then, but I'm not sure how Dad survived...

I'm really sorry to hear this CW. Any dog owner knows how they become family.

I've had dogs all my life but none longer than the 10 year old lab I have now. Just like the movie Marly and Me, my wife and I got her when we were newly married. After 10 years, two kids, multiple moves, career changes, etc one thing has remained the same. A day doesn't go by where I don't worry about her eventual passing.

That is really too bad. As a fellow golden owner I feel your pain. I have had to put down two past goldens and currently have a third and will be getting number 4 in a couple of years. They are a special breed. Take care.

Beautifully written and I am sorry for your loss. Pets hold a special place in many hearts and losing a dear friend like Paisley has to be extremely difficult.

So sorry for your loss, growing up on a farm I never thought I would want a house dog. Now after having a Morkie for 2 years i can't imagine life without a dog inside. Thank you for writing so eloquently what we all think but can't put in words.
