Maybe it's just me but this is not an impressive hire for a team heading into the SEC. I predict they'll be doing another search in 5 years.
Too early to say if it's good or bad, but if it ends up being Venables, I will refuse to believe he was their first choice. He would have been announced a lot earlier if he was.

I’ll say again that I think Fickell was #1 and if Cincy lost then he’d have been announced today. But OU isn’t waiting a month, so they had to move to #2. Agree that if Venables was first choice he’d already be in Norman.

I am a huge Venables fan. I think he is one of the greatest DC's in the history of college football. He is LONG OVER DUE for a head coaching job and I think this will be a really good hire for OU.

hasnt he turned down a lot of jobs?

I remember an Auburn DC who was supposed to be so great as HC that a Collectible Commemorative Coin was minted. How did that turn out?
Muschamp?
Oh, Chizik. Is there a big difference?

Kelly, Riley, even Saban long ago…that’s what most of OU’s (soon to be former) peers do. There’s a reason why much of the chatter on OU forums was thinking it could be Dabo. Venables with this timing screams contingency.

It certainly could work out though. The fit is excellent, and OU had been trending to becoming soft like UT, albeit with much better QB play. Venables will correct that. Reminds me of when OU hired Bob Stoops. He’ll need to be great to prevent OU from slipping to Ok St level in the new SEC

Baggage. That’s why it has taken so long for someone to hire him, and for him to want the spotlight.

Everyone says/alludes to this, but I have no idea what it is. It’s almost become an internet-only truth, like the time Craig James killed 5 hookers at SMU, except that one has some specifics. And Craig James did kill 5 hookers while at SMU.

It is definitely you. Teams from the entire spectrum of college football have been begging Venebles to take their job for the better part of a decade. This is the team who finally gets him, plus is able to take a top OC from the SEC. This has to be the 3rd best hire of the cycle behind Riley, Kelly
We don't know that yet - Riley and Kelly are proven, winning, head coaches. You shouldn't put Venables in the same sentence with those two..
Very underwhelming hire IMO.

Venables for Riley is offense for defense, mild for manic. Will be interesting to watch unfold, hopefully in the SEC.

OU could get back to the defense they had in the 2000 Natty season. That defense was NASTY

I am only following this quite casually but seems to make sense. He's a SEC guy now and was a Big 12 guy. Seems like the guy would be a good fit for what's coming for the Sooners as they move to the Promised Land. He knows the difference first hand in moving to SEC from a recruiting perspective and play perspective.

I may be wrong, but I thought Venables played at Kansas State, and was the defensive co-coordinator at OU, before he left to go to Clemson and ACC.

I've always been curious as well.

My guess is that he may have gotten a little too friendly with the co-eds at different times.

Played at KState
Coached at Kstate
DC at OU
DC at Clemson (ACC)

Ah, oops, typing without thinking. Just sort of think of them as SECish because they are east and champ level. Not the first time I've done that but most of the time I'M the one who reminds myself they ain't SEC.
No doubt this hire has Stoops' fingerprints all over it - and if I'm a Sooner fan, that's fine with me. From the outside it seems like others were not interested.
After all, Stoops arrived in Norman as the celebrated DC at Florida, and never was a HC either. Sooners are hoping for Stoops 2.0.

cue the Campbell to Oregon rumors

We probably really don't know if he turned down USC since Riley is claimed to be their first choice. But if he possibly turned down Washington, wouldn't he turn down Oregon. Realizing of course Oregon is the better program. I could be wrong, but I always feel like Oregon has alot of ties/connections to other future coaching hires whereas Campbell isn't familiar with that region.
