I don't have kids so I need a little guidance.

I have a neighbor that has two kids. I would guess that they are around 10 and 13. Every second of every day they are outside and I never see their parents. We live on a corner lot so they are always playing and running through my lot. This itself isn't a big deal but they are constantly screaming. I have to be up at 5am during the week so I'm usually in bed around 9pm. Last night from 9-9:30 all I heard was these kids running around my house screaming. Finally I went outside and asked them if they had a home and to get off my lawn.

Any ideas?

Should I call their parents at 5am in the morning to let the know what it's like to not be able to sleep?

Set up booby traps in the yard?

Is it normal for a 10 year old to be out running around at 9:30 at night?

Am I the grumpy old man in the neighborhood?

buy them a tv, playstation, and a bunch of soda and pizza. you'll never see them. of course, then you'll complain the the neighbor kids are fat, lazy, and don't do anything.

Actually, I have one of those right across the street and he's the perfect neighbor kid.

I don't know what the heck is wrong with kids today. I remember when I was younger my friends and I were respectful of older people. Now you see kids yelling curse words at older people just walking down the street. What has happened to parenting these days? Do parents not know how to teach their kids to be respectful?? WTF?!?!?

Do you live in Harlem?

If you think you have to live in Harlem to have a bunch of punk kids wreaking havoc on neighborhoods then you need to wake up. Hell just go up to Merle Hay Mall or even Jordan Creek Mall and look at some of the moron kids running around.

I sure did. I live in Urbandale which is a very nice community. Hell... I drive through residential areas in town and kids will yell profanity at you as you drive by, flip you the bird or the newest gang signs they learned at school from their buddies, or even throw stuff at your car. It happens in Urbandale, it happens in Ankeny, West Des Moines..... it happens everywhere. Some kids just don't have respect for anything these days and granted the kids causing trouble are the minority but their numbers continue to grow. Parenting is obviously a lost art.

No, I don't live in Harlem.....and maybe I was exaggerating slightly by saying kids yell curse words at old people just walking down the street.

However, it's not something I have never seen either. I'm not saying all kids do it, but there are plenty. In my opinion, 1 kid doing it is enough. Parents need to start paying attention to their kids instead of letting video games and computers babysit them instead.

You have kids curse at you, flip you the bird/"gang signs", and throw stuff at your car in Urbandale? I call shenanigans.

You can call whatever you want. I grew up in Urbandale and other then the 5 years I lived in Ames I have been living in Urbandale. I have seen plenty of "hawk" acts by kids around here. I was a member at UGCC for several years and punk kids used to vandalize the golf course all the time. It happens everywhere.

....seriously?

You didn't really say if you do in fact have kids swear at you, flip you the bird/"gang signs" or throw things at your car as you're driving.

Actually....walking my dogs I have seen little kids waiting for the bus in the morning by the Cross Creek apartments on 86th and Iltis throw rocks or something at people's cars while driving by.

Sure. I have had things of this nature happen to me. It takes every bit of restraint that I can manage to just keep going on my way and not jump out of the car and teach some punks a thing or two.
