And so it begins... NIL

The SEC has to be worried about this. Suddenly, their advantage of being able to do this without competition is gone.

It'll be interesting how far down the rosters this goes. Will this be just the projected first round type guys that already go to these schools? If a guy is being recruited as a top guy at ISU or a bench player at Bama, will the dollars make a difference? Are the shoe companies going to play favorites and encourage kids to move around? Going to be a couple interesting years as this settles out.

To the bolded, I doubt it. Look at it this way... Phil Knight can spend whatever he wants. However he wants. Perfectly legal now. Do you think he'd have put a loony amount of money into Oregon already if he didn't want them to win? Now he can literally pay players. It won't matter how far down the roster it goes as long as Oregon wins.

The team dynamic is going to get weird with this too. If they are throwing money like this around, how long before egos get out of control and fracture teams?

He could literally pay a 5,000 dollar a month stipend (or more... he's a billionaire) for every single athlete. That is more concerning to me than him paying a 6 figure salary to one guy.

For him specifically, the business may keep him in check a bit. If folks don't like Oregon buying players, I don't see it as a far fetched thing for fans (or schools for that matter) from looking at options other than Nike. If Phil Knight is bank rolling Oregon, you think Saban thinks that an Adidas logo would look better on those uniforms?

I am glad that college players can make money off their NIL, it seems fair to them to be able to do that.

I think there will be a ton of unintended consequences from this that likely aren’t good for Iowa State and will change college sports forever.

I get where you are coming from. I really do. I guess my point is that any way this shakes out as it seems to be doing so far is NOT good for ISU.

Not calling you out or anything... You're a good egg.

This has to slow down the facilities arm race right? Rather than donating to facility upgrades that frankly aren’t needed at most of the blue blood schools, athletic directors will tell wealthy donors to divert their divert their donation to paying recruits for their “NIL.”

You can't just whip out $50,000 for an appearance at a car wash or something, has to be market value according to the rules. At least that is my understanding.
That is a good question that I wasn't aware of.

Is there anything stopping a university from paying an athlete for their NIL? Alabama football pays players to appear in commercials pumping Alabama football tickets for example.
