Just adding chum into the water...either SI or Yahoo had him listed as a potential to fill the Lions vacancy, as well.

If Texas looks to replace Herman, maybe they’ll look no further than the opposite sideline at Darrell Royal Stadium on Friday. Campbell has the Cyclones at 7-2 this year, with wins over Oklahoma and Texas to make a Big 12 Championship Game berth a mere formality.
Campbell will have some options if he wants to leave Ames, from Michigan if Jim Harbaugh is gone to the NFL if teams want to make another run at him. Where Texas might fit on his radar if it were open is unclear. Though he did offer a window into what he thought about the Longhorns (or probably more specifically Herman) after Iowa State’s second straight win in the series, with a “we’re not a five-star factory” comment.
Campbell is building something of his own at Iowa State, from 3-9 in his first season to a conference title game looming in his fifth (30-18 over the last four seasons now). Including his time at Toledo, he has a .618 winning percentage as head coach (68-42).
Texas once would have been a huge step up in job for a rising coach like Campbell. Now, it might be more of a lateral move for him based on what he’s doing at Iowa State (which shows no signs of slowing down). And if it comes down to it, his Ohio roots may lead him to prefer Michigan over Texas if both jobs were open and all things were equal.
That said, Del Conte should be making a list of candidates to replace Herman and Campbell’s name should be toward the top. Simple due diligence says to at least make Campbell turn down an interview.
And they’re in such a good place right now I’m not even worried about them. Their coach would have to die suddenly or something for that job to open up anytime soon.
He’s not going to the Lions. No coach with good options takes the Lions job.
I may be naïve, but IF we can continue to step up the salaries for Matt and his staff then I think there is a VERY small list of jobs I'd worry about Matt leaving for and Texas/Michigan in their current states aren't on that list.
In my opinion if (when?) he leaves it'd be for a premier job that in a strong spot for immediate success (i.e. if Brian Kelly/Ryan Day were to leave for the NFL). Not for a "rebuild" of a power program. He's got control over every aspect of the program here, is building (hopefully) sustainable success without the weight of expectation and seems to have a different mentality than others coaches that are just "climbing the ladder".
Could be wrong on all of this, but I feel confident that if we can keep rewarding the success he'll be here for the long run OR until the absolutely perfect scenario opens up for him.

Right. I didn't say that he was. I'm just adding it to the list of all other places the "experts" claim he is going.
I don't think Campbell is leaving but if Harbaugh is fired, I'd nervously pay attention until something was announced. I'm sure Campbell has been contacted by places like South Carolina and he will be contacted by more people including NFL teams. Get used to it because this will happen every year.

We do have a lot to offer here, with the biggest thing being job stability. Matt would really have to screw this thing up to be on the hot seat, and at the blue bloods you are always one season away from being fired.
Job stability + the proven ability to compete for championships + the culture already being what you want = a pretty good formula for a coach.

Let's not forget that Jim Harbaugh (if he leaves) got 4 years at Michigan before the fan base tired of him (and probably more like 2.5-3 years). And he was a Michigan Man, Super Bowl coach, and hot commodity. Campbell's system can take years to fully implement - does he want to go through that? Or build on what he has already built here. Arguably, he has an easier road to a conference title and the CFB Playoff at Iowa State than he does at Michigan as they are so far behind Ohio State in their own division.

The only time I’ll start sweating is if ND or OSU ever opens up. MSU is never happening - he didn’t even interview for them this time around. Wasn’t interested. I don’t even think Campbell is on the short list for UM because he’s not a “Michigan Man” (yeah - that matters there). I’m not even worried about Cleveland because 1. of him not wanting to spend more time away from home and 2. they’ve finally found coaching stability anyway.
Michigan State was open last year and they had to overreach and overpay for a first year head coach. But the other three (OSU, ND, PSU) for sure.
This is the first year I feel fully confident that Campbell is staying put. If he was going to leave, he'd have done it last year to MSU or FSU. He's both said and shown that he's fully invested in building a dynasty in Ames. Like has been mentioned, the only places I could see him going are ND and tOSU and neither of those jobs are opening in the next half dozen years.

The other thing with Campbell and these fanbases is recruiting. I get the impression he's not a guy too keen on coddling some 5 star kids. I also get the impression he's not a guy that wants to get into the messy recruiting that goes on down south. I think he loves the concept of finding good kids and developing them into quality players.
So not only do you have to win on the field, there is pressure to win on Rivals as well.
