I've done this before and gotten Michigan...I've never been there.

This time I got Grand Rapids, Madison, and Denver.

I love Madison and I guess I blend in, nice.

I grew up near Carroll, IA and moved to Maryland right after college. I was buying some items from a man who had them listed in a classified ad ( Pre-Craigslist). I had no collegiate clothing or anything that would identify me as Midwestern.

After about 5 minutes of conversation he asked if I was from Iowa. I said yes. Then he said "You're from West-Central Iowa". I was blown away. He had been a Greyhound bus driver for 30 years and made a habit of paying attention to dialects.

"The devil is beating his wife"

wtf?
Yeah and the wolf giving birth? That one was effed up.
Okay, apparently those are pretty tame, compared to some other dialects:

  • it’s the wolf’s wedding in Algeria, France and Morocco
  • it’s the fox’s wedding in Bangladesh, Galicia, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and parts of India
  • it’s the jackal’s wedding in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan
  • it’s the monkey’s wedding in parts of South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe, parts of India and the Sudan
  • species are intermarrying in other parts of South Africa (jackal and wolf), Korea (tiger and fox), Sudan (monkey and donkey), parts of India (crow and fox)
  • gypsies are getting married in Croatia, Macedonia and Albania
  • witches are either getting married (Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic), combing their hair (Catalonia) or making butter (Poland)
  • ghosts are either getting married (parts of India) or just making the rain (Hawaii)
  • a zombie is trying to get his wife to give him some salty food in Haiti
  • Hell is having a carnival according to the people in Netherlands and Belgium
  • It’s a glitter waterfall in Canada
.

Since moving away from Iowa, I've gone from dinner/supper to lunch/dinner and from pop to soda.

I've tried to change to "awnt" versus "ant" but I can't break that one.

Grew up in E Iowa as did both my parents. And 1 1/2 sets of grandparents. I did have one grandfather that was born in central NE but I don't think he/they lived there very long.
