Are we better off with FH than GM?

We are better I think. The Gmac era was over, even though he was still here.

I'm thinking Hoiberg can be what Obama was during the last election; an unknown entity that won't be taken seriously, but will end up beating you.

If we were gonna do this I would have taken Vance Downs. He's the only one who has been able to do anything with D1 talent the last 4 years.

And then ends up not living up to his promises and dividing the (cyclone) nation? :wideeyed:

Yes, we are better off, but how much remains to be seen. Could be just barely, but could be an infinitely better improvement. McDermott was a succubus to the program.

Only time will tell about the quality of this hire, I am personally shocked by it...but Fred was certainly a "coach" on the floor as a player, I can see him be a good leader of young men, he brings all of the "integrity" that was respected in GMac..and I would guess players will like playing for him. Welcome home Fred...Let's Go Cyclones!

I was just on a Hawk board to see if they were making fun of us. One of them actually made a good point (WOW!)- If you're worried about Hoiberg not having any experience we could have gone out and hired a National Coach of the Year instead.... like LICKLITER! Look how that turned out! You just never know. Fred could be great!

After one season, Hoiberg will have all the coaching experience he needs. I'm willing to suffer through a bad season if necessary. It can't be any worse than the 4-12 that we were stuck on under McDermott even with guys named W. Johnson and C. Brackins. I think Hoiberg will build us into a more balanced team. No more wasted scholarships. Hoiberg will think like a GM.

We especially are better off with anyone that wants to be here. Mac choose to leave which tells me he's thought about it before. If he wanted to be here he would have stayed. So good by mac and good luck were kick your *** next year at the Well!!

Recruiting will make or break this move. I can't imagine the players won't respect and look up to Hoiberg, who was a local legend, and a starter in the NBA.
It's not like basketball is a game of complex schemes, like football. Get talent, get them to play defense, win games.
Either way McD was a lame duck coach this year, and we'd have been in the same situation by March '11. Better now than later, and at least the arena will be full next year to see what happens.

Jamie just hired his Steve Alford. On the job training for the next three years.

I think Fred will be up-to-speed in less than a year. Who was more qualified than McDermott when we hired him? How good of an Xs and Os coach was Johnny Orr? He seemed to win a few games.

To me, Fred seems to have that winning combination of likeability and great intuition. While I say this with the benefit of hindsight on GM, we're much better off with Fred.

Still up in the air. But in the long-term, I think yes. Fred will have time to turn this around, while Mac's time ws running out. Short-term, if we can keep the recruits and our current players, we're certainly no worse off with Fred than with Mac. And like you said, we have hope and excitement again.

Without question, we are better off without GM dragging our program further down at this point in time.

However, one of the biggest concerns I have with Hoiberg coming in, with absolutely no coaching and recruiting experience at the DI level, is that he will not be able to learn on the fly quickly enough to engineer a speedy turnaround.

Make no mistake...we need a quick turnaround...no more 3, 4, or 5 year plans. Some of us want to be relevant again before we are in need of a walker or hoveround!

Actually, very good.

He used to diagram plays right on the floor of Hilton in front of the bench with a piece of chalk...AND THEY ACTUALLY WORKED!

Are we better off? Like others, we couldn't do much worse than we currently are. I love Fred, but all I can think of is how we would be snickering had Iowa hired B.J. Armstrong. We would be all hooting about hiring a home-town hero with absolutely no coaching experience, and how hilarious it is that the Hawks think that past glories will translate into magically turning around a Division I program despite the fact that you haven't coached anything.

Do I want Fred to succeed? Yes, now that he's our coach, just like I wanted GM to succeed. Am I nervous as hell that this looks like a desperate move? Absolutely. I hope it works out, but this is not an easily defensible hire.

If nothing else, if a player is mouthing off to Hoiberg, he can put his arm around his shoulder, point up at the #32 hanging from the rafter, and say to him "Think I don't know what I'm talking about?"
