Why do people think every good transfer could wind up in Ames? He was a 5* recruit who was never recruited by ISU or Murray State, and had offers from Duke, Virginia etc. He's going to have options, and those will include schools like Duke, Kentucky and the top tier programs. He's not going to Ames, and people really needn't be this excited over every good transfer, particularly with no reported interest from the player.
You're right Frogger...let's not even try. We have no chsnce. Let's just always go after the 3 star recruits and call it a day. No need to get our fanbase all excited for nothing...you DO realize we're Cyclones right? Were use to rejection and failure...it would be against our nature not to at least try for a big fish now and then.

I heard some interesting things about why he is transfering (girlfriend broke up with him and couldn't stand seeing her at the games anymore). Also, heard his top 3 likely landing spots are Marquette, Notre Dame, and Baylor. Any more updates on what is going on with Nichols?

Heard that too about the gf, apparently she's a cheerleader. Also saw some other intriguing stuff about him but I'm not sure of the credibility. Apparently he & his family are waiting to contact schools back until next week & want to decide by August 1st. Haven't heard much else.

Call me crazy but I think Matt Thomas has some great basketball in him as an upperclassman. A Morris, Thomas, Burton (3 seniors) combo could be great. NN and Cooke are solid reserves. Land a couple stud big men and I don't think the drop off would be that bad at all. Nichols would be an enormous pick up (I agree very unlikely).
I agree Thomas will be huge, starting this year. I think Monte only has 1 more year left.

If this is true, I wouldn't want to grant him a release either. Grow a pair, Austin. I'm sure you won't have a problem meeting new girls.

So I guess Virginia it is. Still not sure how Duke would have a scholarship for him.

Good article on the situation.

Yes, the schools can dig in their heels if they want, but they need to be prepared for the bad publicity. IMHO, all transfer rules ought to be determined by the NCAA. They're the governing body, so that seems like something they should set. And if not them, have the conferences set the rules. Letting the schools set restrictions themselves, on a case by case basis, is just ugly all around.

The unconditional release was given after he hired an attorney, and if it was worth hiring an attorney, it's reasonable to assume he has significant interest in one or more of the four schools that were initially blocked: Virginia, Providence, Iowa and Tennessee. Someone said his sister goes to TN, so perhaps he's interested in them as well as VA. I doubt he's interested in Providence or Iowa, and Iowa doesn't have a scholarship available in any event.
