It would look foolish to expand now. More as a knee jerk reaction. If they are to expand, it'll be calculated. Think about it. The other conferences are set for now. No hurry.

Exactly. The Big 12 has to be assured that the TV partners are going to pay for the expansion, before we diminish our cuts and add more mouths to feed.

I think we need to lobby for playoff expansion, and create a divisional set up within the 10 team format that uses a conference game to establish a champion.

These would be the divisions:
Old Big 8 Division
ISU
KU
KSU
OU
OSU

New Big 12 Division
UT
TTU
TCU
BU
WVU

We would keep the round robin format, but have the winners of the respective divisions play in a championship game on Championship Weekend, and the winner of that game is the Big 12 Champion. No needless expansion, one true champion, and a Championship Game that creates the possibility of our blue bloods playing each other the biggest weekend of the year.

Could the XII come out of this smelling like a rose? I would love to see us use TCU/BU getting bounced as justification for permission to have a CCG. Anyone heard what a CCG is worth?

Big 12 to receive $58 million from Bowl Games

ACC
$50 million base to the conference
$6 million to the conference for FSU (Rose Bowl – CFP semifinal)
$27.5 million to the conference for Georgia Tech (Orange Bowl)
Total: $83.5 million to the conference
[...]
SEC
$50 million base to the conference
$6 million to the conference for Alabama (Sugar Bowl – CFP semifinal)
$4 million to the conference for Ole Miss (Peach Bowl)
$27.5 million to the conference for Mississippi State (Orange Bowl)
Total: $87.5 million to the conference
[...]
Starting next year, the Big 12 and SEC will get 40 million extra each for the Sugar Bowl

Just mind boggling that these individual bowls can pay out this much money...

It would be worth something extra than we're already getting, and we would eliminate the excuse of the committee.

The potential negative would of course be the underdog winning.

Big 12 conference would win in this situation but I don't see what it would do for ISU. ISU need expansion of mid-quality teams to enable more wins and gain bowl eligibility.

OU and Texas would want to stay in the same division - that way when they finish 12-0/11-1 respectively, they both have a shot at the playoffs without risking another loss between them.

You could set it up however the schools wanted.

If we could get half of what the Big 10 gets for the Championship game without expansion, that would be a total windfall.

Theoretically, that shouldn't matter. As was stated by ESPN many times, Alabama was in win or lose to Mizzou.

If we get a giant pile of money for it, I say go ahead. Really though, this was just this years excuse the committee used to put OSU in. Having a Championship game this year, wouldn't have mattered, the committee would have just used OSU's dominance over Wisconsin as more of the driving, deserving factor.

It's not worth the hassle though if more money isn't involved.

Enough to pay for one additional team without diminishing payouts to the rest.

I'm not in a big hurry to add two...but I think this is why BYU will always be in the discussion.

If their brand grows at all by joining a P5 conference they pay for themselves, and the championship game pays for the other team if they aren't a team that increases viewership/market/tv. I hate making it seem like I'm some big BYU fan, but they bring more to the table in terms of what matters than about half of the current P5 members...and that's playing in marginal conferences and now independent.

I think, don't know for sure, but think BYU made requirements that were totally unacceptable to the league when they first visited. I suspect those same hurdles would not exist today, as BYU has openly campaigned for a slot in the Big12.

That's only one special case and it's Alabama. If FSU, Oregon, or OSU got beat in their championship, they were kissing their chances to play in the Playoff good bye.

Two 5 team Divisions.

"Overalls" Divison
OU
ISU
KU
KSU
WVU

"Chaps" Division
Texas
Tech
TCU
Baylor
OSU

Have a championship game between the winners of the divisions. No big whoop.

You might need to create the "Dinner Jacket" division for TCU, and possibly Baylor...

Agree, but it does add to my point that the Championship game isn't a rule, merely a convenient excuse. If it were Texas with one loss to Baylor and no CCG, does anyone believe we'd be having this same discussion?
