Now we need Bill Self or Scott Drew to take the UNC job.

Maybe UNC goes back to the "KU Well" again.

Can't see UNC taking Self with the Adidas stuff out there. Scott Drew should be a name that gets brought up. Not sure why he hasn't been the target of other programs over the years.

Beard will make Texas a consistent top 10 team year in and out
Why? I mean, you can't pretend you are the underdog at Texas. And there are very serious problems in the athletic department at Texas. I imagine he'll be about the same there as Tech, and people will be confused as to why. Also, expect Tech to fall to bottom third of the conference again.

He is a Texas alum and was a grad assistant there back in the early to mid 90's.

Yep. And we have no idea about what he has told his bosses about the jobs that may entice him. Heck, everyone on this site seemed to know for more than a year that Beard would end up at Texas so I am sure everyone around the TT program knew the same thing. It is business.

Beard is undeniably a great coach, but...

-- He achieved a ton with the Culver team, but Culver kind of fell into his lap. He's come back down to Earth since then. Not saying merely being good is not an accomplishment in Lubbock, but pump the brakes.

-- The institutional rot at Texas is deep. Athletes are entitled. The Athletics Department is flabby and clueless. I don't think Sarkisian is really the type to instill much of a working-class attitude from the top down.

-- Texas boosters are going to Texas booster. I am sue the whisper campaign has already started.

-- They ran off Rick Barnes, who I would say is at least as good of a coach as Beard.

I hope he is ready. Austin has chewed up and spit out a lot of good coaches the past 15 years.
I almost forgot who they hired as a FB coach. I don't see Sark lasting half as long as Herman there.

I see it as more like Campbell going to Ohio State. Not his alma mater, but back to a familiar state where there has always been murmurs of him waiting for an opening. Or even the Cleveland Browns who recycle through coaches quickly. That's his pro team and he has been rumored for NFL jobs as well. I don't see Campbell ever coaching in Texas or somewhere in Iowa besides Ames.
No. More like Campbell going to OU or Texas. Intra-conference is a big distinction and would be much worse.

It will be interesting to see how this goes, if there's a dysfunctional culture to break through like in football.

While he absolutely has a higher chance than most anybody else there, I'm still going to wait until I see it. How many basketball coaches and football coaches have they, USC, and Nebraska cycled through with people saying they're back? I think Beard will be successful there, but it's not like a lot of talented coaches haven't tried and failed.

this is good for us.

I feel bad for tech fans.
Why should we feel bad for tech fans? They poached Beard away from UNLV when he had been their coach for less than a month. Why should they get sympathy when he bolts after four years at tech?

Beard is the very definition of a hired gun. His 4 years at tech are the longest he has been HC anywhere with the next longest stop being 2 years. He has been HC at a school for a single year 5 times - not counting his 3 weeks at UNLV.

Yep, feels like this is what everyone says every time they hire a new coach.

It's his alma mater, and I'm assuming he'll be paid at the minimum the same (Tech was paying him 6+mil). He might be a little slimy, but I don't see this particular move as such. Lubbock was a nice place for him to prove himself as a P6 coach and he knocked it out of the park and now has what is potentially a dream job for him.
I mean, given a choice of coaching at your alma mater, in Austin with infinite resources at your disposal OR coaching (and living) in Lubbock where every year is a rebuild challenge . . . . tough choice.

Idk. I'd hate to see him go anywhere else honestly. I suppose in conference would really rub salt in a festering wound, but I don't think that it's something we'll have to worry about.

Well, he is an alumni of Texas-Austin and was a student manager there. It is not like he is going to a random program. And I am sure he is making major bank with the move too.
That's how I see it. It's not a great look to leave a school to go to an instate rival, but the alma mater angle changes it. If his career goal has always been to be the coach there, how do you pass it up? It sucks for Texas Tech and their fans, but I don't blame Beard for wanting to go home. He's not likely to get the opportunity again

I could see Campbell going to Ohio State or the NFL, most fans would hate it, but understand that move. But Beard went from the school that was paying him 6 million a year, that gave him his chance to coach at a high level, to their hated instate rival.
This is just a kick in the nuts to TT and its fan base. Beard did not leave because he did not have success or the university was not paying him well or giving him what he needed to win. He left because he is an alum of UT and WANTED to be THEIR coach. Their hate for UT is going to burn long and deep in the TT fan base.

I think TTU probably hires an assistant to keep this ship somewhat afloat, but that's a patch job that will end up putting them back further in the long run.

I'd say this guy is the early front runner. Former Barnes assistant. Lead recruiter for Jarrett Culver and Zhaire Smith. Left to be the UT-A HBC

Well Smart's teams always came off as Charmin soft to me. So it'll be interesting how the returning members fair in Beard's system. Cause his teams always seemed the opposite of soft.
