I agree. Isn't Beard kind of a hardass? How well will that work with the typical pampered 4-5 star recruits they have? Wasn't Shaka a tough nosed guy in a similar vein, and that didn't work (although I think Shaka was figuring it out and adjusting his style).

Beard may very well create a dynasty, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it sputtered and didn't really work. Feels to me more like a Calipari type is needed there, or an ex-NBA guy used to dealing with egos.
As long as he can win games and guys get to the NBA the hard ass approach will probably work. He has credibility. It's not like he's coming in from a mid-major.

It seems to me that Texas grinds up coaches. If I were Beard I'd be excited but worried -- perhaps a few restless nights on my bed of money.

I thought we kind of did the opposite...

Fred leaves. Hired a new guy from outside the "family" because he had head coaching experience.

Not retaining the right-hand man, which I guess we wandered back to just now.

Makes me very jealous of Texas.

People said the same thing about Campbell. Campbell has integrity, built a program. Beard is a sellout, chasing paper.

This is just false. He was like the 7th highest paid coach in college basketball at TT.

we did do the opposite, and the net result was a patch job that put us further back in the long run. Hope TJ can turn around though.

they plan on hiring a search firm so I assume they will go out of program.

reporter asked if there were any tech projects that beard had a hand in or wanted with the job?

Beard wanted to downsize the capacity of their arena.

AD without saying it is pretty mad at Beard leaving.

2 assistant coaches are staying so far. One was out of town on travel so no clue if he stays. The other was Adams (I’m guessing he is waiting to see if he get the HC job)

AD says job hiring could take a few weeks.

texas asked permission to interview.

Posted this last week in the Shaka thread...but seems to be relevant again. TT isn't a cellar dweller, as some seem to think they are.

Not sure why people think that TT is going "back to the cellar" if Beard leaves. TT pays a big salay and they can get big names there (i.e. Bobby Knight and Tubby Smith). They can also get good coaches there...like Chris Beard. They have a solid "modern" MBB history, dating back to Gerald Myers in the early 1970s. They only have two less NCAA tourney appearances than ISU does. Not to mention a great recruiting footprint.

If Beard does leave, I'd be so bold as to suggest that there would be as much or more interest in the TT job than there was in ISU's job.

Folks said the same about BU football after Briles left, and Rhule had them back to winning in short order. TT MB would likely be no different if they hire the right guy (like is the case for any other program hiring a new coach).
