PBR is a solid, solid beer. I'll drink it as soon as I'd drink any import.

Having said that, the best beer I've ever had is Caffrey's, an Irish cream ale. Unfortunately they stopped distributing it in the U.S. so others must not have agreed with my opinion.

Wheat beers rock, Negra Modello is awesome, Foster's Bitter is very tasty, regular Foster's is horrible, most American beers are serviceable (except Natty Light and the Beast family of beers), and Newcastle is my fallback beer when nothing else looks good.

I have to agree with the PBR. I think it is a good beer. Very underrated, IMO. I just had one recently. It was out of a iced cooler so it was really cold and it was in a bottle not a can. I was surprised how good it tasted.

Oh, it's not near my favorites, but when you compare it to other beers in that pricepoint, Bud Lighte, Miller Lite, Coors, etc. There is no comparison...

Well, yeah - You're comparing it to domestic light beers, which by definition isn't good. Bud light, Miller Lite, and Coors Light are all basically just carbonated water with a little bit of barley for coloring and flavor and alcohol to make you act silly. Bud heavy, on the other hand, certainly isn't bad (although it too is far from being a favorite. It's distant Czech cousin, Budvar, on the other hand, yum...)

Six pages into a beer thread on an ISU message board, and not one mention of Olde Main? How?!?! They just started bottling a couple of weeks ago, and I actually like it as much out of the bottle as I do right on site! My fav is the Off-Kilter (Scottish Ale, very dark, but smooth and great flavor). Dinky is pretty good too, but if you don't like Blue Moon/Belgian Whites, you won't like it.

I have gone through many beer stages in my life.

1. The "Can you buy me some beer" stage - Whatever the guy who is carrying a large plastic bag full of cans will buy you if you let him keep the change.

2. The Quantity vs Quality stage - I don't care what it is, just give me a lot of it.

3. The Beer Snob stage - If more than 2 people have heard of it, I ain't drinkin it.

4. The old guy stage - If there is a good beer around I will drink it, but good old fashioned American beer is just fine and dandy with me.

I was right at #4, enjoying my Budweiser Long Necks, when I was snatched from America and moved back to not just Germany, but Bavaria, 20 minutes north of freaking Hallertau....

And I'm a "beer snob" again, because they make the best beer in the world in the brewery down the road....

Now, if I can get the Euro rate to go back down, I'd be in high cotton....:skeptical:

Official Yuengling Web Site: America's Oldest Brewery

I am lucky enough to be in Maryland for the next couple months and have been trying my hardest to drown in this stuff since I arrived. It is one of my favorite beers hands down. I have been on my local liquor store for the last 7 years to start carrying this back home but they keep saying that can't get it. If any of you get out to the east coast it is a must try.

I am a fan of Yuengling and will often hit up my friends with Pittsburg ties to bring me back a case. I have to warn you though from experience and multiple stores heavy drinking or repeative drinking for a long period will mess with your digestive track.

I was also a fan of Caffrey's. Articles came out soon after they pulled out of their distributor in the US. I don't remember if it was Anheuser or Miller. Caffrey's was in arguements with the distributor over the handling of their beer. The distributor wasn't meeting their standards. Rather than allow it to impact their name and reputation Caffrey's walked.

Overall Beer list.
Stone's Ruination IPA (I prefer it over the Dogfish Head)
German Lager: Augustiner Brau and Weihenstephaner - Original (Careful picking up in the states to many distibutors are will to let these sit for ever)

Harpoon IPA is decent

Zonker Stout out of Snake River brewing is good in that category

A neighboring variety Kentucky Bourbon Ale will quickly get you and your wife/girlfriend drunk. You will have to be okay with a butterscotch finish from your beer.

Favorite mass produced American: Pabst

Great Lakes makes Nosferatu that is a pretty good Red.

As others have indicated from their comments freshness with beer is key and proximity plays a big role in that.

I was going to say that too. Olde Main has some good beers and it is a nice place to stop after games or anytime. I like the Clone Ale. Actually Main St. Ames is really a fun time.

Back when I was at ISU in the 80's the converation would have revolved around Budwiser, or Miller, or Coors with the various lite products. If you really wanted to get daring, you might have talked about Corona's on spring break. Oh they also had those cheezy wine cooler(Sun Country Coolers??)

Thanks god for the micro brew revolution!

The European beers are of course good, but I think a lot of the Microbrew beers that can be had here in the states now compete well.

I've always liked Heiniken, St. Paule Girl, any red beer(Killians red is good for me!), Dos Equios, Fat Tire. Lately I've been gettings a lot of the Sam Adams variety packs.

Dude, I am going to make you sick right now. Last night, I got a bottle of Weihenstephaner-Original and one of Hefe-Weizen from the local guy that were freakin' awesome.

Germany rocks, in stuff like this....

I greatly envy you. I will give you a suggestion if you are willing to do a bit of train ride while in Deutschland. There is a town called Oberstdorf in the German Alps. They have a brewery there called Zotlier. Beer is only put in Kegs and kegs never go farther than one day's truck ride. It is definately out of the way. But the beer it's so good when it hits your lips.

I'm on it....

(Cue "Mission Impossible" theme song)

But not until after June 15. Things are going to be busy until then, at work...
