Not sure you have access to it up in Iowa but if you get the chance to try Abita Purple Haze...do it! Moreso, if you ever get to Abita, LA (north shore of Lake Pontchartrain)...make sure to stop in for a brewery tour.

By the way, I used to live in Texas and see a lot of Shiner Bock references...the folks in Shiner have a nice little tour as well...but not nearly as good as the Abita folks have!

You guys ought try Goose Island beers if you haven't. Honker's Ale is my favorite, but also Kilgubbin Red Ale and 312 Urban Wheat are solid.

I don't think you can find Yingling west of Ohio....but that's also a good one. My personal favorite is Sam Adams Boston Lager, with Boulevard Wheat a close second.

What is with all the hate for Miller? Sure it is not great, but I don't think it is much worse than most of the other pressure brewed rice based beers. It is certainly not the worst cheap beer I ever drank. Rhinelander, now that was nasty. Drury's was undrinkable ice cold.
I prefer Bud over Miller because to me Miller has a flat taste, whereas Bud has a sweeter taste...which also provides a better aftertaste.

Go with a Boulevard Wheat or a Shiner Hefeweizen. Can't go wrong with a Landshark Lager.

Since it is a little cool out tonight, what about a Black and Tan to warm the soul?

Z

Definitely love the Boulevard Wheat with a lemon slice. I'm anxious to try the Landshark but haven't got around to it yet.

I prefer wheat style beers myself. The Boulavard Wheat is a great one. Here in Wisconsin I drink a lot of New Glarus's Dancing Man Wheat and Island Wheat from Capital Brewery in Madison.

Then again, I can turn around and drink Natural Light with no problem.

I'll pretty much drink anything. One thing I can't stand is arrogant know it all beer drinkers......

I must recommend this:

Delirium Tremens - Brouwerij Huyghe - Beer Advocate

But good luck finding it.

I know the Happy Gnome bar in St. Paul, MN has in on tap. One of the best beers I've ever had. It also has won "Best Beer in the World" at various contests.

Brewers Website:

Bien Venu sur le site de la brasserie Huyghe

Oh, and, YES, it is 9.0 ABV

I had a Delirium quite a while ago and I could not believe it won any sort of award. I thought it was terrible. Not just bad, but disgusting. I have a feeling its one of those you either love or hate with no in between.

I personally like this one lately:

I've gotten myself in trouble by getting into Belgian beers and big IPAs in the last few years. Almost any mass-market beer now just seems disappointing and bland.

Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA is great and not too extreme.

Belgian style beers are more of an acquired taste. I've enjoyed Delirium Tremens, McChouffe, and of course Chimay among others.

I have Dogfish 90 minute in my fridge right now. Have you had the 90? That stuff has some serious hops. Love it!

<----- see my avatar. I don't think they distribute very far to the north, but if you can find it GET IT. Everything St. Arnolds makes is great!

I see there are TWO German beers on the list; and then at only #48 and #62.

Frankly, I think the Belgian beer tastes like rancid horse urine.

These kinds of "polls" are always suspect, to me....

Myself, I like me some Winklerbraeu of Lengenfeld Kupfer Spezial. And maybe some Anno 1050 from Weltenburg.

But I'll give you that Anno 1050, which is the world's oldest continuously produced recipe, is an acquired taste.

I love the Belgian beers but every time I drink them I end up getting completely bombed.

About three weeks ago I was drinking at the Red Monk and started drinking Rochefort Trappistes 10 and 8. I puked for the first time in many years and continued to puke for the next whole day. It took me 2 weeks before I drank another beer and it still didn't taste very good.

That beer is great tasting but it has a lot of alcohol so you have to be careful.

312 is my beer of choice right now! It's out of Chicago and sells for around 16 dollars for a 12 pack...very good beer though!

oh yeah? I have a (10 dollar) bottle of 120 in my fridge right now I brought back from Colorado.

Also: Gordon by Oskar Blues is REALLY good, though I'll stick with Hopslam and 2 Hearted by Bells and Alpha King by Three Floyds over it. Only Gordon comes in a can though.

Right now the grill is warming up for some brats and drinking a chilled Newcastle Brown Ale. My wife is drinking Charles Shaw Cab also known in the household and amongst friends, "3 buck Chuck"..... which my wife says is the best deal out there. Best price per case comes out of Minneapolis via connections.

Keep the troops in mind this Memorial Day!

Cheers!

Everyone is so refined with the wondrous eclectic beer choices they are posting on the board. I truly envy those that can find a beer that no one else has heard of.

I agree you probably love it or hate it.

New Belgium makes a beer called La Folie that also wins lots of awards but it one of the few beers I had to spit out when I tried it. Couldn't drink it.
