This is just throwing **** at the wall to see what sticks.

Boise State just isn't Big 12 material. Even if you wanted to grade on a curve for potential. Even if you thought Big 12 presidents would approve of such a thing.

If that's where this is all headed, ISU football will be dead.

I don't think they are saying its for sure but keep in mind Jamie Pollard in an interview right after expansion was announced or before it was announced and everyone knew it was coming said somebody in the room was giving Pete Thamel info because he was dead on about facts.

One thing Thamel said was the league would eventually go to 14, very possible even 16. He also said playing in different time windows and weeknights was important. Like it or not BSU fits that and has done well ratings wise considering their league. I'm sure the B12 won't do it just to add teams but they will have a good idea there is a value to the networks, and at reasonable ratings for those time frames.

The other reason the league might look at it is if they get a scheduling agreement with either the alliance or the SEC those leagues will have 14 or 16, except for the PAC12 at 12. Also it wouldn't surprise me if this year after the for lack of better terms constitutional meeting among schools if we get close to 80ish schools breaking away. If that happens we might see a combining of the P5 into P4 or maybe a 6th league survives combined schools of AAC/MWC where they make quite a bit less than PAC/ACC/B12 but more than they do now. There is also a lot of talk of some schools being concerned of players being considered employees and some existing P5 schools dropping down more to a amatuer/Ivy league model. There could be a lot of changes the next couple years.

Assuming the P5 stays as is and no P5 teams swith leagues:
Memphis & BSU at 13 & 14 make sense.

USF as 15 or 16 makes sense. SMU surprises me quite a bit. I sure hope a SMU addition is not to replace a Texas team or two to the PAC, the B12 needs to own Texas. But SMU does have a wealthy fan base which is good for advertising revenue if they are #16. I hope some of the Texas teams can start a little later even in CST if the league needs that to get paid, that also makes sense in Sept and even early Oct. while temperatures can be unbearable. Thamel had said don't sleep on San Diego St. which could have been a decent #16 but the 365 guys have said the PAC & B12 might have a handshake agreement to stay away from each other and maybe that includes in the PAC's backyard.

If USC/Or. and a few others don't like the new contract and are leaving then all bets are off.

@FriendlySpartan I'm curious, in a vacuum which schools out there are more attractive to the B1G in an expansion scenario than ISU? A few have been thrown around (Notre Dame, UNC, UVA), but I'm curious which others are on the list.

I think the order is
1. Notre Dame 2. NC 3. USC 4. VA. 5 OR/UW/UCLA/Col.

I think ND is the biggest prize but who knows if they want to join a league. Even though USC has a lot more potential I list NC next because the B1G lost big time to the SEC in losing the state of Texas when UT/OU went to the SEC. They need recruiting grounds! NC & Va. are pretty solid in number of recruits and to have the flag ship schools in those states help PSU first of all maintain their brand and gives OSU/UM and others additional solid football states and secondly if they are to get ND I think they need those two South Atlantic states.

USC also has recruits but I don't think the B1G is in any danger to losing them to the SEC. So if the B1G could real in NC/Va and probably two more from Duke & Ga. Tech among others, adding USC plus 3 schools like OR, UW & UCLA really gives the league a good situation to possibly eventually secure ND. The league would have added the southern recruiting and a huge rival out west in USC to entice ND. If Stanford is that important to ND maybe the B1G even adds them if it gets ND.

Outside of those 3, Oregon is top tier especially after the new Knight foundation focused on NIL. USC is also a very hard brand to pass on even with their struggles. UVA, Washington, stanford and then Colorado (although I disagree on Colorado it’s one that has been discussed). Thats probably it outside of SEC schools. UCLA could come in a package but not by itself.

US News & World Report ranks Memphis #249 Academically, Boise State is in a group at 299-391. USF is a respectable 103.
SMU is tied with aggy at 66, and they beat TCU this year.

Not thrilled about most of this. I assume we are trying to get UCF, Cincinnati, and BYU a geographic rival.

The guy in the middle is Craig Smoak. Sports director at 1660 am in Waco. From all I've heard he's a pro radio reporter and while he obviously covers Baylor, he's not on the BU payroll or a BU mouthpiece. Solid sourced sports news

Well we better up our game, congrats Cincinnati nice win!!
Cinci is so impressive because their coach gets poached every time they are ranked. Fully expect fickel to go to USC and I really feel for their fan base having their school be seen as a stepping stone.

What if he stays?
Extremely unlikely. He would be passing up around 2-3mil per year. Plus with all his success at cinci he still has a pretty trash recruiting class with only one four star. Also they will always be on the outside looking in for the playoffs as a group of 5 team. USC is simply a much much better job. Coaches have left Cinci and had major success at other schools don’t really see why that would change.

He's an Ohio guy. Wasn't it rumored he wouldn't go to Michigan State a few years ago and the only other job he would entertain was Ohio State? I thought I had read that at the time.

Wasn’t a rumor, Michigan state offered him and he flat out said no. While I’m very happy we got CMT, USC is a much better coaching job then state is. Also the USC athletic director and him are boys.

You just sound bitter as Finkel turned your school down.

Not bitter at all, CMT has us in an awesome position. We’re ranked, beat Michigan in year 1, and our recruiting class is one point behind Florida’s. However I’m a realist and the USC job is much better then MSU especially 2 years ago when we were a dumpster fire
