Honestly, as an Iowa State fan I've found the B1G network pretty forgettable, especially when I had DTV because the channel is buried. During football season I almost always forget they have a Primetime game. With hoops I think the B1G really misfired when they decided to compete against the NFL on Sundays...

The Big12 is starting to look extremely smart for dragging their feet on the conference network. The next round of television contracts are going to look much different along with the delivery services for the content. The Big 12 will end up being in a really good spot to launch a streaming service via Amazon, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
You think so? I dont think so... one reason $$$$. Do you know how much $ the big ten teams and other conferences that have TV networks have got from these networks. B12 teams have not been paid nearly as much as these schools all because the b12 does not have a network. I also dont see a streaming service via amazon etc. paying the conference that much

For fans that all they care about and watch is ISU then I can see this. But for fans that actually want to watch other sports that ISU does not have or are not good at also want to watch kids from Iowa play for a b10 school in a sport and actually follow local kids or people that like sports in general and want to watch good games like you said prime time football the btn network is for them.

Right now I agree with your logic but this big TV money bubble is going to burst. The Big Ten will have to divide out to 14, the Big 12 only to 10.
I like the format the Big 12 has for an unknown future.

The Big 12 is doing just fine on a per school basis once you factor in the third tier rights that those other conference give up to their TV networks.

And that's why it's kind of a confirmation of the way the market is going that Comcast is eliminating some subscribers from the channel. Those subscribers will no longer get B10 network, thus B10 network will get less $$$.

As cable cutting goes on this trend is bound to continue.

Ultimately B10 should be in a premium sports package so people who don't care about it don't pay for it. Which is really why cable cutting is the trend; people not wanting to pay for programming they don't want to watch.

The Pac-12 network is so far a failure...five years after it's launch, the published payouts of around $2.5 million are well under the predicted $6 million. Most, if not all, of the Big 12 teams are doing better than this with their 3rd tier rights deals. We all know about UT. WVU recently signed a deal for $9 million/yr. OU's deal signed several years ago was for $7 million/yr.

The ACC network, which has been in discussion since 2012 (some reports say even before that) and finally set to launch in 2017, has been delayed until 2019 because ESPN couldn't find a financial model that would make sufficient revenue. As with the Pac-12 network, it remains to be seen whether the ACC network will deliver as promised, or turn out to be another Pac-12 fiasco.

The only two networks that are providing big payouts are the Big Ten and the SEC. It is not a given, as you imply, that a conference network will generate big revenue.

The writing is on the wall. There is a reason why the Big Ten could only get six year deals when they renewed their media rights deals in 2017.

Why is that? Do you not like volleyball or softball? The Big Ten is, hands down, the best volleyball conference and BTN televises a lot of matches in the fall. It's great being able to watch Nebraska, Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin all the time.

And, while they're not great at softball, it's still nice to see. We're able to watch several girls that we know personally, thanks to BTN. It's only going to get better as DD gets older and more and more of the girls she's played with/against are on TV. If DD doesn't end up playing at ISU, I hope she chooses a Big Ten school so I can watch her in four years.

The BTN model and the money grabbing realignment nonsense that came with it has damaged college sports and nearly triggered a series of events that would have left ISU on the outside looking in. That would have harmed not just our sports, but the school as a whole. All this for a few dollars. Unforgivable. The presence of Iowa in the conference is just icing on the cake. The BTN is the crown jewel of this whole mess. I hate it, I hate everything that it stands for, I hate everyone involved in making it happen, and I hope this is the beginning of the end of BTN. Good for you, Comcast.

The B1G network model is falling apart at the seams because cable/satellite subscriptions are shrinking. Yeah, it's great BTN made an eff ton of money by screwing over subscribers but that pool of money is drying up.

This is exactly why Comcast is cutting ties with BTN outside of the BTN footprint. NOBODY cares and it's costing them money. The viewers you described are few and far between... BTN gets lost in the shuffle and non B1G fans don't seek it out. The numbers don't lie...

Take off the Big Ten blinders buddy. The Big Ten makes more money than the Big 12 but the distribution per team is nearly equal. These are the 2017 distributions for the Power 5 conferences.

Also, I am pretty sure the Big 12's payout above doesn't even include each school's tier 3 revenue. How's that Rutgers add treating the Big Ten now?

Is there even overlap? The NFL season ended December 30, the first B10 Sunday basketball game was January 7th. It would have conflicted with NFL playoffs on January 7, but it would have on Saturday as well. Same for the following weekend. I think they purposely scheduled opposite from the NFL, in fact. Their Sunday ratings, as well as those of the ACC, who also plays Sundays, are the best of the week.

The same article you linked indicates B10 schools will receive over $50 million/team beginning in 2018.

The BTN is just fine, whether they're able to squeeze additional $ out of non-market cable stations or not.

I don't think this reflects the B1G's new contract, kicking in this year, where full-pay distributions are $50+ mill per school.

BTN plays Sunday games during the non con as well right?

Nice to see you defending the Big Ten on a message board of a team you "don't care about".

True but all of the conferences should see an increase next year. The Big Ten may be the leader in 2018 but in 2017 the Big 12 and Big Ten were nearly equal.
