You never know, guys. It might actually be fun to win more often than we lose in a conference.

And I'm sure many of you will say, "Well, if it's in a lower conference, it won't mean anything."

Remember that, should we eventually end up in one of those lower tier conferences in the near future.

We have had only 2 winning conference records in the past 31 years. 5-3 in 2000 and 4-3 in 1989. Hopefully CPR can improve on that, if not we will be scrambling for 6 wins most seasons.

If conference championships, bowl games and national titles are team goals then ISU will have to play and beat elite teams to do so regardless of what conference they are in.

Moving to a smaller conference so ISU can be the skinniest kid at fat camp is no way to move a program forward.

Yes, in theory, anything is possible.

It's not possible, though. Not in this conference. Not for us.

Here are the major points as I see them in this discussion:

1. Totally excellent and astute article by Brent Blum. It provides an inspiring and likely scenario of the future.

2. Paul Rhoads is the perfect fit for our team and may well be the guy to get us to the next level.

3. We should have more recruiting power in Texas with Nebraska & Colorado less in the picture and the additional opportunities for Texas athletes to play back in their home state each and every year.

4. Success breeds successs... we've got to be patient and let things improve over time. If we can make another bowl game this year that's another great positive step. We need at least one good upset or statement game each season. Our recruiting will slowly improve over time.

5. We should never, ever, ever, ever contemplate or wish to be in a lower division. That's a defeatist attitude. Iowa State would lose overall stature (acedemics, funding, etc.) if we were to drop into a lower tier. If we were in a lower division our recruiting would suffer as well and we'd probably ultimately find ourselves a "middle of the pack" school even in a lower tier.

Yeah, I could possibly get behind that idea if it were just the Football team going. I would give Rhoads ample opportunity to compete in the Big 12 first. But yes, I am sick of losing.
But the problem is, it wouldnt be just the football team. I am a big ISU Men and Women's basketball fan. Men's bball is my #1 sport. I dont want to see those programs have to fall down to a lower conference. I would sacrifice wins for the football team to not see those other programs suffer in that way.

Basketball has enough games and an actual tourney, so you can get respect by being good.

In football, the majority of the cyclone fanbase feels good about themselves because we belong to a good conference we've never won and will never win.

Great, great article! He is right. We have to beat TT and KU down right now. Then beat KSU and Baylor. The two losses against KSU have hurt. They were opportunities to keep KSU below us on the totem pole. the good news is Snyder can't coach until he is 120.

I wouldn't consider the Big East a lower tier MBB/WBB conference. Some would argue they are better.

Oh yeah, that wouldnt be a step down. I guess I was just assuming the normal MAC, WAC, MWC arguments.
I do think that with the departure of CO & NU, the Big 12 will be the premiere bball conference in America. From top to bottom.
And in Women's, it already is.
