Yeah I don't even know the min length of boat necessary. High 20s?
Been @ LOZ over 40 years & condo 10. Take grandkids out early & back in by 11ish. Gets busy from then to mid/late afternoon when people get to coves, bars or go home. Fridays & Saturdays are busy, Sunday is dead after noon. Rest of week is usually very quiet. July 4 thru first week of August is the busiest. We’re at the Niangua Bridge across from the Cave. It’s a different world from the Grand Glaize Bridge to Bagnell Dam, I never go there in my 26’er, it’s not big enough. If you know where The Fish is that’s as far south as I go. I have no problems boating at LOZ: don’t pull tubes in the main channel, if you’re driving pay attention what’s coming your way & what’s behind you, when the sun goes down always be done boating, drinking in excess whether driving a car or boat is asking for trouble. I’m 73 and will boat & cove until they have to pry my dead cold hands off the wheel.

Friend of mine was fishing at Hillsdale Lake SW of KC. Storm blew up & everybody headed to the ramp. He just got his boat out of the water & lightning hit a boat waiting his turn. Killed the guy. Moral of the story: I always watch clouds when rain might be predicted. Big Lakes create a lot of wicked pop up showers. I worry more about that than idiot boaters.

There’s no messing around with weather when you are on the water.

Sad series of events…

Back in the mid 1980's...I was around 20, and my Dad and I were fishing out on the Missouri (Oahe Reservoir). It was a very nice day. Later in the afternoon, we heard on the radio that a dry cold front was approaching much faster than expected, and there would be strong NW winds, so boaters were advised to get off the river. We were several miles south of the dock. So, we headed back but the motor died. There had been some trouble with the ignition cutting out when the motor got warm, but that had supposedly gotten fixed...I guess not.

Anyway, after the motor sat for about 20 minutes, we got it started, but by that time the winds had picked up. It was getting a little dicey, but we were making slow but sure progress (only 45 HP motor). The motor died again, but it was only fuel this time, so we switched tanks, and the motor started right up. Things were getting really tough when we pulled into the dock. The dock faced NW (and thus the back of the boat was facing NW) and the wind was stirring up white caps. My Dad ran to get the trailer, which was not far away, and by the time he got backed down, the boat had been swamped. We got it pulled out, gathered up the stuff that had floated out (thankfully, the wind blew it all to shore), and headed home.

After some extensive testing, the boat shop found an ignition component that sometimes failed upon getting hot.

About a week ago I am waiting in line to get my boat out of water and this poor bastard forgets to hook his safety strap to his boat before pulling out, and the boat slides off the trailer. He had to go in reverse and push the boat back in the water with his trailer while scraping the crap out of that boat. Luckily the boat doesn’t look very expensive so his pride is what took the most damage probably.

This is Gray’s Bay on Minnetonka.
