Back in the mid 1980's...I was around 20, and my Dad and I were fishing out on the Missouri (Oahe Reservoir). It was a very nice day. Later in the afternoon, we heard on the radio that a dry cold front was approaching much faster than expected, and there would be strong NW winds, so boaters were advised to get off the river. We were several miles south of the dock. So, we headed back but the motor died. There had been some trouble with the ignition cutting out when the motor got warm, but that had supposedly gotten fixed...I guess not.
Anyway, after the motor sat for about 20 minutes, we got it started, but by that time the winds had picked up. It was getting a little dicey, but we were making slow but sure progress (only 45 HP motor). The motor died again, but it was only fuel this time, so we switched tanks, and the motor started right up. Things were getting really tough when we pulled into the dock. The dock faced NW (and thus the back of the boat was facing NW) and the wind was stirring up white caps. My Dad ran to get the trailer, which was not far away, and by the time he got backed down, the boat had been swamped. We got it pulled out, gathered up the stuff that had floated out (thankfully, the wind blew it all to shore), and headed home.
After some extensive testing, the boat shop found an ignition component that sometimes failed upon getting hot.
