Iowa State Basketball is officially in good shape now. Everything Coach Hoiberg needed was just made official with coach Lutz. Two Years from now ISU will be back at the top of the Big 12 conference.

If a recruit wants a good experienced coach? We got it. Recruit wants a connection and experience in the NBA? We got it? Recruit wants an outstanding game environment? We got it. New practice facility? We got it.

Everything that was missing in the MBB program was just filled. Everything that was already pretty good just got better.

Almost everything is filled. We now just have to actually win games we should and win a few we shouldnt.

This is great for the staff too, IMO.

Not only do their skills all compliment each other nicely to teach players. They all stand to get better from working with each other.

TJ WILL be a head coach one day. I can't imagine that working with Lutz won't make him be a better coach when he does take on a head spot. Obviously FH will get the same insights from Lutz as TJ will. Hoiberg provides a great passion for the University obviously, but also NBA connections and Pro experience that the others can feed off of to help teach guys what it takes to get to the next level and stay there. And based on TJ's ability to recruit I can't imagine that watching how he gets that stuff done won't help Hoiberg. Obviously Lutz is an accomplished guy on the recruiting trail himself.

Between Otz and Lutz and bringing in Fred to close I can't see anyone who would ever have any interest in ISU not coming here. If this staff can't get them I don't think any staff could get them to ISU. The only players we don't get are going to be the ones that would never come to Iowa State anyway.

That's without even mentioning Cyclone legend #2 sitting on the bench who can relate to players that may have doubts about Ames, or wanting to give up. Grayer, Lutz, Otz, Hoiberg, that is a staff of epic proportions.

Here's to the rebirth of the magic, the return to national relevance, and the chance to compete for conference titles again. Someone with the NWS needs to issue a Cyclone watch for the next 5 basketball seasons for all Big 12 basketball arenas because conditions are right to produce Cyclone activity again.

So after taking a look at the coaches, it looks like Rutter will still be DBO. I thought that might have gone to Grayer, but Lutz has enough experience for two assistant coaches, so I'm not too worried.

Does anyone know who will be the position coaches, for big men, perimeter, etc.?

If Grayer were DBO he couldn't recruit and we want him to do that.

Is Grayer a coach? I thought Lefty Moore was joining the staff as an assistant which would seem to leave Grayer in a different role.

That's a good point. I'm not sure. I thought Grayer would be moving out of the coaching position as well but I was going on the cyclone website.

Basketball (M) - Coaches - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

maybe that won't get changed until Moore has completed the recruiting tests etc. Want to have the most flexibility as we can.

I think Lefty was hired as a Grad assistant.

After hearing the report on Ejim at the CCL.
I think Grayer may be the perfect guy to teach
him to dominate.

Couldn't be more thrilled with this hire...I'm seriously pumped for the future of MBB. We've got great fans, a great home court and a great coaching staff. With the prestige of our new conference in MBB we have the chance to really become a national player again.

Welcome Coach Lutz!

This is a great hire. Although I'm not one of the people who is concerned about Fred's lack of head coach experience (its basketball, people, not rocket science), I am very excited to land one of the better coaches in the game as an assistant. Could not be happier with his staff. Reminds me why I never liked the Chiz (because his staff was atrocious through and through) and why I really like CPR (great, great staff).

Great, great hire to get Freddy on his feet and running. How long does he really stay as an assistant coach, though? 1, maybe 2 years? Hopefully, we have something established by then.

It is great to have it finally be official. I would have been happy to have Bobby Lutz as our head coach. Anytime you can get this kind of quality as an assistant coach you can't go wrong. I'm very excited about Bobby Lutz being on the staff!!! Go Cyclones!!!

My guess is that we have Bobby for at least as long as his buy-out package is in force. Whether he stays after that won't matter as by that time Fred will have a good base and ready to roll. Fred will probably have to replace T.J. before Bobby.

As said weeks ago when this was originally discussed this is a great hire.

However, I find all of the back handed swipes at Grayer and many of you appearing to be concerned about him as one of our assistants to be insulting. His lack of experience seems to be a deal-breaker for many of you but you don't have any similar concerns with FH...very curious.

Its not curious at all. One inexperienced coach is enough, we don't need two of them on the staff. Seriously, stop living in the past.

I asked the question, but based not on how I feel about Jeff Grayer, but rather confusion as to what is happening. We know TJ is in as an assistant, and lead assistant at that. Lutz is a great short term fit. Lefty stated he was going to be a coach. I have not read where Grayer said he was going to be a coach, but rather that he was going to be on staff. Thus, I asked the question. I didn't mean to, nor did I think I did, bag on Jeff.

I think it has something to do with, you know, being around the NBA for the past 15 years. FH and Jeff Grayer do not even come close to having similar backgrounds. Not that I don't like Grayer as an assistant because I actually love it. I just don't think FH is as inexperienced as some would say. I realize he has no experience coaching but he does know the game.

Fred is going to be just fine as a head coach. Hes not a dumby when it comes to the game. I still think the hire of Hoiberg is going to be a special one when its all said and done.
