And? I think the 26th is a bad date, and I'll bet that I'm not the only Cyclone fan that thinks so. I can almost guarantee that we'd have a better turnout for Memphis, regardless of the opponent. That matters. We're hoping to get picked over other teams in our conference based on how well we travel. That's a reputation we need to maintain. Going to Memphis or Orlando would be better for that reputation, imho. Phoenix would be a fine location too, if not for the date.

We haven't been to a bowl since 2012 and first under Campbell. I think we will travel just fine wherever it may be.

I mentioned we'd have a better turnout in Memphis, I understand that. But I'm saying we will travel just fine wherever we go. Id rather play a P5 opponent and if it comes at the expense of a few thousand Cyclone fans, I'll still take it.

Ya personally for my group of people Memphis against a G5 is a definite no...

well, obviously we'll take it. We'll take anything right now. Like you said, we haven't been to a bowl game in 5 years. It comes down to a personal opinion though, and for me if the question is "would you rather play a PF opponent at the expense of not being able to attend the bowl game?" I'd take a bowl game I could actually attend, every time. Historically, bowl games don't happen all that often at ISU.

Why do people keep talking about playing Memphis in the Liberty Bowl? They will end up 1st or 2nd in the AAC.
Aren't they obligated to fill up the ACC bowls first?

The liberty is like last for the ACC and there was some napkin math involved if FSU made it bowling that the Liberty bowl would run out of ACC teams and might choose Memphis instead

Even if we are able to play UCLA and possible #1 NFL draft pick?

I think from a recruiting standpoint, playing a Pac 12 team out West is way better than playing a G5 team in Memphis...granted most our recruiting has shifted from the West to the Rust Belt, but kids will want to see us play and defeat this storied programs.

ISU recruiting is 95% done and I am confident our few remaining targets care about what CMC and staff have to tell them than what bowl opponent we play. Your reasoning is highly questionable.

I just want to party with as many ISU fans as can go, and Phoenix on 12/26 will have many thousand less ISU travelers than 12/28 Orlando or 12/30 Memphis.

You mean if Florida St. doesn't make it. Otherwise this makes no sense. Plus isn't the Liberty Bowl an SEC and not an ACC tie in? You sure it doesn't depend on how many teams the SEC gets in to the New Years 6?

All on board the Cactus Bowl train!!!! Xmas in Phoenix?! Count me in for that. Plenty will travel.

Also, for selfish reasons as others have stated - it's the only bowl I'd be able to attend due a wedding on the 30th that the lady is the MOH in...

So I count 9 bowl eligible SEC teams. 3 (Auburn, Bama, GA) are locked into NY6 + CFP the others are...
LSU
Miss St
S Carolina
Tx A&M
Kentucky
Missouri

The bowl structure for the SEC is in this order...
  • #1 College Football Playoff. Automatic berth to one of the New Year's Six bowl games
  • #2 The Citrus Bowl versus Big Ten or ACC. In years the Big Ten places a team in the Orange Bowl, the ACC will place its next selection in the Citrus Bowl after the CFB Playoff committee has made its selections for the Big Six Bowls.
Tier #1: Conference, in consultation with bowls and schools, assign teams to the following six bowls:

Tier #2

So how would the SEC not send a team to the Liberty Bowl?
It would be the Birmingham Bowl and Independence Bowl that would be without SEC team. What am I missing?

That is fine if you prefer the Cactus Bowl, but the argument that it is better for recruiting is stupid.

(1) Cactus would mean ISU gets passed over by better bowls, Alamo, Camping, Texas, Liberty. Never a good sign for a program to get passed over.

(2) We have no recruiting ground in West. We do not generally compete for recruits against Pac12 teams.

(3) Camping bowl against potential P5 opponents VTech or ND is far, far, far better than unrated UCLA.

(4) Liberty Bowl is traditional P5 SEC team. If it is Kentucky or Missouri, we compete against those teams for recruits. Hell, our coaches are trying to get an MU commit to switch as we speak.

(5) Even if Memphis takes the SEC spot, last I looked, that is a CFP ranked team. And a team we can potentially be in competition for recruits.

Again, I get it, you want Cactus. No problem and I will be there. But to argue it is for recruiting reasons is a dumb stretch.

SIAP....but did anyone listen to John Walters on KXNO yesterday? Could get reception but know he was asked about his thoughts on bowl projections. Realize everyone is guessing I suppose, but thought he might have had some good info.

Also, do we want USC (who I think is 10) to beat Stanford (12) so if TCU gets beat by OU in a close game, they still might consider TCU in a NY6 game? Guess I've seen different sites still list TCU in a NY6 game with OU in a playoff game. 4 teams in playoff, 8 more teams in NY6 bowls. Wouldn't TCU still be one of the top 12 teams ranking-wise if Stanford loses, or am I missing something here?

Pretty sure we have gotten a lot of recent JUCO guys from the West and have heavily recruited Arizona Western CC, one of the top JUCO's in the country. Not to mention one of the priority recruits right now - https://247sports.com/Player/Joey-Ramos-88594 - lives in Glendale.

Is a recruit going to go "Wow, they beat Memphis!" or "Wow, they beat UCLA!"

I'd say they'd be more impressed with the latter, even if Memphis is ranked in the CFP.

Clearly the Camping World opponent is going to be better than the Cactus, but thanks for pointing it out.

I'd be all for Liberty but playing a non P5 opponent isn't that great.
