I'd almost prefer the Cactus Bowl vs a quality PAC-12 opponent (UCLA, Oregon, etc.) than the Liberty Bowl vs Memphis or UCF or some G5 team. Even though the Liberty Bowl is "higher" than the Cactus Bowl
Completely agree. If Memphis or UCF are in Liberty, I hope we go to cactus bowl to play a Pac 12 team. Memphis or UCF matchup really has a very low excitement level for me.

Exactly! Sure the date isn't the best for travel and such. But, on the national level more people will tune into a game between UCLA-Iowa State on a Tuesday night compared to Iowa State-Memphis Saturday afternoon.

It wouldn't be a bad matchup, but the date is the kicker. The day after Christmas. It's basically the only bowl game I won't be able to go to. I can't sell leaving on Christmas day to my family, especially because they won't be going with me.

The irony that looks like the B12 could get hosed in year 1 of a championship game by having it. If we didn't have it. OU would be in playoff guarenteed and TCU in NY6. Now a decent chance we could lose one of those by playing this game. I wonder how much they factored losing NY6 spots into the equation. I will be pissed if the B1G and SEC get 3 the ACC and PAC 12 get 2 (or 3) and we get just 1 Playoff/NY6 team.
Idk, good thing though Oklahoma doesn’t play Kansas and beat them 55-3 this Saturday. They would probably drop 3 spots for doing so.

That's true, it's the only downside I see. But, I don't have a dog in that fight since I can't make it (thanks honeymoon for taking all my PTO!)

Yeah, I'll be pissed if we end up in Phoenix.

A. The date is not ideal
B. That means a few bowls passed up on ISU for other teams.

Even if we are able to play UCLA and possible #1 NFL draft pick?

I think from a recruiting standpoint, playing a Pac 12 team out West is way better than playing a G5 team in Memphis...granted most our recruiting has shifted from the West to the Rust Belt, but kids will want to see us play and defeat this storied programs.

Oh as far as who ISU plays I agree it would look much better playing a PAC 12 or ACC team, but selfishly I want to be able to attend the game.

yeah, even then. I don't care as much about the opponent as I care about being able to go to the game. Phoenix is a tough one to get to because of the date, therefore I don't want Phoenix. Doesn't matter who the opponent is. The opponent is a ways down my list of priorities. It's on the list, but not as big of a deal as other things.

So a selfish reason? ;)

Nah, I do agree the date is tough to maneuver for most. Fan travel wouldn't be as good as it would be Memphis.. but I do think more fan would goto Phoenix than we'd expect.

According to the alumni association there are quite a few Cyclones around Phoenix area, and over in to the Bay area as well. I still think we'd have a great showing down in Phoenix.

Playing Memphis in Memphis is just terrible all the way around. Getting tickets could get a bit tricky as well once we sold our allotment, Memphis would pack that stadium.

Yeah I am also being selfish.

I don't think playing Memphis themselves would be all that bad, considering they'll likely be a ranked team with a high draft pick playing QB.

It's the whole.......playing them in Memphis part that would suck.....

And? I think the 26th is a bad date, and I'll bet that I'm not the only Cyclone fan that thinks so. I can almost guarantee that we'd have a better turnout for Memphis, regardless of the opponent. That matters. We're hoping to get picked over other teams in our conference based on how well we travel. That's a reputation we need to maintain. Going to Memphis or Orlando would be better for that reputation, imho. Phoenix would be a fine location too, if not for the date.
