The Netherlands is a little teeny tiny country, too, but they have an internationally-ranked top 10 Soccer team. Playing on the national team in any country is still a quite a feat. You don't just walk up to the practice facility and say "Hey, I'd like to walk on to the team, please and thanks."

I don't see how you can stake the absolute certainty that he'd never play in the Big XII. First of all, as you said, he's extremely tall. Secondly, he has notable basketball talent that is easily visible by watching his tapes. He's not an NBA first round pick after next year, but he's still a talented player. My thought on him was that by his junior year, he's seeing regular playing time as a role player. He needs some time to develop, and he has plenty of that time, if he chooses to use it.

No no. A few have consulted their crystal balls and you are wrong. We should never sign anyone ranked outside of the top 100 and we should consider it a failure of the coaching staff (current and prior) and JP that we have let the once lofty blue blood ISU program sink to such depths - even before playing 1 friggin game.

Pretty good pick up at this point in the game.

He he will be an update from the Greek, who had no chance of making it at this level. Hopefully he can develop into a contributer after being in the program a year or two.

Looks good. Not much is needed for this next year, but if he can add anything, it will help. Obviously, the ideal situation would have been Williams sticking with his commitment, but have to move on.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Ernst was the top-rated player in Iowa in this class by Prep Hoops Iowa.....http://www.prephoopsiowa.com/2015-rankings. Hopefully Small can work with him to develop him into a Big 12 player.

Plus, at this point guys, we don't know if this is a choice between GT and Ernst. But signing Ernst does give us a little extra insurance in that regard, either way.

I personally hope it's both, not one or the other. They both show great potential.

Does this mean we have to shut down the 500+ page thread making fun of Iowa's recruiting?

According to the Iowa Preps guy, this kid was somewhat becoming a hot commodity here as of lately with interest from Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and Texas. Granted, it is late in the game for everyone and I've yet to hear of an offer, but it is something.

Correction: Maybe I read the tweet wrong as I guess the interest came pre-injury.

Let's admit it... If this were Iowa, there would be a thread devoted to trolling on the acquisition. The fact that we weren't able to get a decent transfer is a little disheartening. ACL's can be devastating for a player as well, even with the improvements in the surgery. Some kids never regain their confidence and lateral aggressiveness as a result.

The fact he isn't the highest ranked remaining recruits tells me the staff isn't grasping at straws but bringing in kids that they feel can really help the program. UNI has a decent size list of guys like this that have turned out to be pretty special.

Well, UNI plays in the MVC and not the B12. That's not an apples to apples comparison.

And I don't understand what that first part means. Taking a player with no other major offers just to have a practice body seems exactly like grasping for straws.

Hoiberg always said he wasn't going to spend schollys just to spend them, I'd say I prefer that strategy.

How have either shown great potential? Neither have played a minute of significant college basketball

They have to show potential before actually playing the big game. It's not like they pull kids off the street.

For GT, it was his tapes and National Team play. Not many players have that on their resume. For this new guy, he has good numbers in highschool, a little bit of recruiting attention, and good size. It's also interesting that he also placed 2nd in 4A State High Jump, that would imply he is very, very athletic for someone of his build. I don't know many 6'8" 215LB guys that can clear a 6'6" bar.

Stuff like that shows potential before hitting the floor.

My bad. You guys are right. Clearly he was awesome. Lottery pick, probably.

Greece is a teeny-tiny little country. If you're 7 feet tall and live in Greece, you're on the national team even if you've never touched a basketball.

Call me names if you want but I stand by what I said. The guy was never going to play regularly in the Big XII. Ever. I'd way rather that scholarship go to an Iowa kid.

PS: And everyone ******** he's a low-ranked recruit, so what? Does EVERY scholarship player start? Is every scholarship player a super star? No. This is a solid, late pick-up of a kid who will probably work his *** off for this program.
Don't sell Greek basketball short. They have a pretty good basketball history. Current and former Greek NBA players include:

Giannis Antetokounmpo
Rony Seikaly
Kosta Koufas
Rasho Nesterovic
Yao Ming

So he became a hot name while recuperating from ACL surgery? This is not a guy that gets interest from Wisconsin or Texas. I'm fine with taking him, we have extra scholarships and he can always be a big body. But those people on this thread saying stuff like "we're not only going to recruit top 100 guys" realize there's a lot of space in between Top 100 and this guy, who was available two months before classes start, correct?
