There are SO many ways a kid can meaningfully contribute and never touch the floor. 15 schollys, we play 5 at a time and have traditionally only gone 7 deep. Let the kid come in and hit the floor at least once before you marginalize his efforts, his skills and his choice to play basketball at ISU.

Let's admit it... If this were Iowa, there would be a thread devoted to trolling on the acquisition. The fact that we weren't able to get a decent transfer is a little disheartening. ACL's can be devastating for a player as well, even with the improvements in the surgery. Some kids never regain their confidence and lateral aggressiveness as a result.

This is true, but we're not Iowa, and TJ does have a good enough track record to take a chance in this situation, IMO.

There aren't any more immediate transfers available so if the choice is to swallow a scholarship, or take a chance on a 6'9" kid who looks reasonably physical and is proven to be a good jumper, then I'm ok with it.

If we only had 2-3 scholarships to fill next year, then we could be more picky. But we have will still have 5-7 more spots to fill in the next 10 months.

Well, UNI plays in the MVC and not the B12. That's not an apples to apples comparison.

And I don't understand what that first part means. Taking a player with no other major offers just to have a practice body seems exactly like grasping for straws.

Hoiberg always said he wasn't going to spend schollys just to spend them, I'd say I prefer that strategy.

Fred's recruiting strategy was a total failure the last two years, so this may be a bad example to use.

That's why we're in the situation where we have to take a guy with no other offers who is coming off of an ACL.

When was the last time a player tied up a scholarship for 4 years without playing much? They transfer if they aren't going to get playing time.

I don't want to harp on the kid because I'm sure he's a hard worker and great and everything, but Fred was getting those players to walk on.

I think it's safe to say Fred had the best recruiting strategy in ISU history. Nothing has ever worked better. It's absurd to flip flop and act like it wasn't good. Especially since we mightve gotten Diallo if he'd have actually been coaching ISU for the last two months here.

i think a few factors are in play here:

1. little talent in pipeline
2. transfer strategy is likely not repeatable
3. mcdermott/lickliter fear syndrome

this signing will be viewed by some as "nothing to lose" while plenty of others are justified in saying "this is not the start i was hoping for"

You can lol all you want, but our whale hunting strategy got us into a situation where we had to re-recruit an entirely new roster every two years because we landed exactly ZERO whales. That's unsustainable, especially now that transfer recruiting is far more competitive.

Fred took Edozie, the Greek, and KJ Bluford. Those guys are all stretches just like this is.

Yeah, I wonder how successful Fred would have been with transfers going forward. When Fred started going after transfers it was schools like Oregon and UNLV that seemed to be our main competition for transfers. Over the last few years, Kansas, Duke, Michigan St, Arizona, and other big name schools have been going after these guys too. It definitely was going to get tougher landing big time transfers even with our track record of success. Fred basically recruited two guys over the last two years and didn't land any, if he planned on being here long term I can't help put think we would have went after more Monte or Niang type, not quite blue chip recruits.
