"Preliminary Action: The Director of Athletics, at his or her discretion, may take preliminary action to temporarily suspend a student-athlete from participation in practice or competition and/or access to athletic department services when the Director of Athletics has verified that felony criminal charges have been filed against a student-athlete or when there is specific and credible information (e.g., arrest records, statements of law enforcement officers, University records, third-party or witness statements, or acknowledgement by the student-athlete) for reasonably believing that a student-athlete may have committed Category I misconduct." (University of Iowa Official Athletic Site Athletics)

This is from the Univ of Iowa code. Something similar probably applies to ISU. Fred doesn't have to worry about getting sued if Bubu is found not guilty. Same thing happens at jobs- if the employee is charged with a violent crime, then you can put him on administrative leave until the case has ended. It's not a violation of innocent-until-guilty. It's just about protecting your employees.

I think the comment about a law suit was regarding kicking him off the team before it is resolved, not suspending him indefinitely until it is resolved.

They can't do much with him until the courts are done. If they kick him off and he somehow comes up innocent, he could sue the university.

No, he couldn't. Coaches can remove players from the team or revoke scholarships each year with nearly complete autonomy.

Scholarships are not four-year contracts. Fred could cut anyone from the team basically just because "he feels like it." No way to see a successful lawsuit. Team rules...etc...

Neither Fred nor the team are going to turn their backs on him in this situation. They feel he has a strong case...they will let the court process play out. Can't believe all the posters ready to convict someone with no knowledge of the situation.

No I agree.

I was just pointing out that if he wanted to he could give him the boot.

But I'm guessing based on past behavior and reputation they are going to protect him a bit and let everything play out.

However, the university would not be liable for anything if Fred decided to cut bait today.

This is a message board, we have collectively jumped to greater conclusions with less info about less important issues in the past. Just as the sun rises each morning, internetty overreaction will stand the test of time....

Fred undoubtedly knows more than we do (we most of us). As an Ames alum, I'm sure there is a strong bond b/n playa & Coach. These charges are super serious and the bond within the team is very strong too. So lets let this play out and see what happens. It makes no sense to play God. Go State

Plenty of posters have attacked the alleged victim without any real knowledge of the situation also, yet the county attorney obviously thought there was enough evidence to press charges supposedly with more information available.

Given the dramatic increase in talent at the 1 and 2, would Bubu see much playing time anyway?

Regarding people jumping to conclusions on Bubu's legal situation, one can only hope that those being the most judgemental are cast upon equally if they get on the wrong side of the law. No, wait a minute, I wouldn't wish that on any one, not even those that have thrown stones in the past!!

Well, scholarships are guaranteed for at least a semester, right? I mean what would happen if you pulled a scholly mid-semester after he had been attending classes for a few months?
