A few lesser known horrors to check out if you haven't seen them:

Session 9
The Ugly
It Follows

These usually show up on horror movie lists but they're not big theatrical releases.

I hate Paranormal Activity so much.

This. And they somehow keep getting worse with every one that they make.
The first wasn't bad for a low budget movie. After that they get progressively worse. I just watched The Ghost Dimension last week. I think it took me 3 viewings to make it all the way through. You get tired of 50% of the movie being grainy footage from cameras looking at an empty room.

Wasn't in their search function.
Well, that's disappointing. I saw June 15 release, but being a foreign made film who knows how accurate that is. I think it also goes by the name Generation Z. I wouldn't try too hard to find it, as it will probably be on ScyFy channel anyday now.

Just saw As Above So Below. Missed the first part of it but it kept my attention once I started watching.

I really liked As Above So Below. I'm not a huge fan of found footage/first person camera, but here are some more recommendations that I enjoyed in that genre, if that is your cup of tea:

1. REC/Quarantine series (pretty easy to find)
2. Frankenstein's Army (I already posted the trailer earlier on this thread)
3. The Devil's Pass - takes place in Russia, I believe? I thought it was pretty cool.

4. Jeruzalem - think Cloverfield in Jerusalem.

5. The Pyramid - good, but not great. Who knows, you might like it more than I did.

I might remember a few more later on.

Part of the problem I have with the found footage genre is that there is next to nothing in terms of introducing you to the characters, or developing them in any way. If there are more than 2-3 characters, it's tough to keep track of who's who (especially with the jerky camera movements, and the frequent selfie close-up comments by the camera operators). I find it more annoying than creepy.

My wife and I have an ongoing debate about which is creeper, aliens or ghosts. I've always been way more creeped out by aliens because in my mind it is more plausible (all though very slim) than a ghost encounter, because ghosts aren't real. It's gotten to the point with my wife that she won't even watch supernatural horror movies anymore, so I've not seen any of the new stuff. We did watch 10 Cloverfield Lane this weekend, which was pretty good, but not a straight up horror movie by any means.

I was shocked to find out the only REC movie that's available for streaming on Netflix is REC 5.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre, so I haven't heard of most of these titles. I did watch As Above So Below a few weeks ago and liked it. I also thought Devil was done pretty well.

I have a weird fear of possession movies, so those movies generally get the NOPE button from me right away.

Has anyone see "The Relic"? I loved the book (Preston and Child) so it made me apprehensive when I read that they cut out a major character.

Watching "Hush" right now. Typically not a fan of the intruder in the house type of movies, but this one got good ratings on Netflix and IMDb, so I'm giving it a shot.
I watched that last weekend -- thought it was better than average, but I'm more into supernatural horror. I will say, when I was about 9 I watched Nosferatu late night at my grandma's. Scared the crap outta me.

Yes, I have...and it's an enjoyable (if stereotypical) flick. Avoid comparisons with the book (which I also loved) and you'll probably enjoy it. It's not super scary though...

I agree with this. I think the issue with most found footage movies is that they always seem to have one of two plots: group of kids on vacation or group of kids at a party and then something goes down. If people start dying in the first 10 minutes, there is not enough there to develop characters. They should take at least 20-30 minutes to let the viewer care about these people. Otherwise, I just want the biggest criers and screamers killed first.

To me it depends on the type of ghost and the type of alien. Only 1 alien attacking people? Ghosts are scarier, especially if they're the type of ghosts that can follow you outside the house no matter where you go. Alien invasion or abduction? Then I'm more scared of aliens.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Depends on the one alien though. One xenomorph from the Alien universe beats any ghost IMO. For me, the alien movies always stick with me a bit more, because there is a likelihood that there is life elsewhere in the universe, so there is a miniscule chance that it could actually happen. Whereas I view ghosts and stuff the same way I view vampires and werewolves. Sure the supernatural movies are fun and scary, but the scariness of them has never stuck with me in the same way as alien abduction and invasion movies do.

I thought Cloverfield was a really good found footage. Despite what everyone says, I actually enjoyed Blair Witch, too.

Oh, hell no. Blair Witch is a 15 minute short movie stretched out into 81 minutes. I hated that movie. I mean, the payoff was okay, but not worth 81 minutes of my time.
