The wrestle off to me just proves he’s no better than he was last year.
Well that's certainly a stretch to make that statement
The wrestle off to me just proves he’s no better than he was last year.
Go back and watch the Carr/Berge match. One was the better wrestler and the other got his hand raised. One just got out of high school and one has already spent a full year in the Penn State wrestling room. Straw will be ranked 15-20 all year I think. Depends what you want out of the program this year. If Carr wants to go, let him. I am fine with Straw - hard working, National qualifier, might win a match or 2 at Nationals.I agree that Carr being the best was never in question. But we have seen signs in the past that Straw could be competitive. My thought was if Straw could improve to be a top 20 wrestler, then we would not need Carr. However it is now painfully obvious that we have a huge hole at 157 and need him.
Carr is very good, but he’s not winning 4 titles regardless of Nolf. That should not be a factor. After Nolf graduates, PSU slides in Berge who just beat Carr.
Looks like all the matches from the scrimmage are up on YouTube.
Edit: Not full matches and not all matches were posted but something to scratch that Cyclone wrestling itch.
Cam Kramer is the account that posted them but I found them by searching iowa state wrestling cardinal and gold scrimmage.Who posted the videos? I could not find them on YouTube
I did! I was there taking pics/vids. Sorry for them being shaky; I forgot my tripod.
Now time for a sell out.
and here's the list of matches from the scrimmage:
- My social media handle is @ckramerphoto on twitter/instagram/facebook and "cam kramer" on youtube.
- I'll be at the majority of ISU events taking pics/vids, as well as UNI, GV, Nebraska, and a whole lot of high school duals/tournaments, and traveling to CKLV in Nov/Dec
- I'll do my best to upload day of/day after an event, and will try to post links here. Thanks!

If you think of the team, it has a far better chance at competing for a National title in Carr's redshirt senior year than this year.
Would it help more in the short term for recruiting to not shirt him? Show recruits that they can go right away if they are ready?

Good old standby was Jenn beating Sanderson his redshirt year. Does anybody really think Jenn was better than Cael. Just because they get upset or have a bad match doesn't mean you look elsewhere immediately.
This is a longer road than just a year turn around.
This. With the way the sport has progressed with online videos and other media, along with the RTC's, clubs and big National tournaments, these kids are coming in ready to go right away. Handful of true freshman AA every year now and the elite ones contend for a title. He is battle tested and ready to go if he wants.Times have changed. The amount of elite, high-pressure competitions that Carr has been a part of are unlike anything that existed 20 years ago. The elite level kids coming into college today are far more mature (from a competition and training standpoint) than in years past.
We never know what can happen in the future. If he is better than Straw and he WANTS to wrestle, I say let him. It improves us at 2 weights and also keeps the redshirt in our back pocket in case of injury.
I'd like to think bumping Straw up would be an improvement at 65 but that's not a guarantee by any means. I really think Jennings could have a solid year if they let him go instead of alternating between him and St John.It improves us at 2 weights and also keeps the redshirt in our back pocket in case of injury.
You also have no idea where Carr will be in his 5th year. He could have had career ending injuries. Maybe his Dad has a falling out and Carr wants to transfer.I don’t think it’s a question of whether or not he is ready. It’s more of a question of where the team will be later as opposed to now. Why use him on a team that’s not going to be as good as one in 3 or 4 years?
Good reasons to go now. The big one for me is to catapult recruiting for the future. After Spencer went the hawks have dominated recruiting this year. It can have a good effect on getting guys to commit and jump on board seeing a young guy go out there and do very well. You also have no idea where Carr will be in his 5th year. He could have had career ending injuries. Maybe his Dad has a falling out and Carr wants to transfer.
If he’s healthy, the best guy on the team, and a potential AA, he should go now. Too many unknowns in his 5th year. Plus the added benefit of recruiting.
A little sloppy in that match. He got way out of position and would have been pinned if he was wrestling someone closer to his size.Video looked like classic leisure from HS. Still got the same style.
