Chris Babb still has a fighting chance to make Celtics

Don't be shocked if the Celtics leave a roster spot or two open to save a little money and for future flexibility with the nearly-inevitable Rondo trade. Because they are over the cap, the Celtics are penalized 50 cents for every additional dollar the Celtics spend on player salaries.

..“Right now we’ll have a full roster,†Ainge said. “So there’s some guys we’re still taking a look at but we got a lot of guys. We’ve been active but just in a different way. We’ve been trying to make more deals as opposed to just free agent signings because we haven’t had cap space and we have a lot of bodies and we have a lot of guys we like under contract.â€
This was in July and who knows by now what they might do if they are locked with with contracts, three of which came over from the Brooklyn trade. Gerald Wallace ($10.1 million owed next season), Kris Humphries ($12 million), and Keith Bogans ($5 million).
Ainge then contradicts himself at the end of the article saying exactly what kucyclone mentioned:
" Ainge maintains the Celtics need to shave players off the roster, condense salary, and put themselves in a better financial position, unlike those luxury tax years when they were competing for championships."
Danny Ainge happy, but Celtics’ salary cap a concern

Looks like Babb is going to be cut from the C's. They are planning on only keeping their 14 guaranteed contracts, and it is mostly a financial decision because of luxury tax etc. Too bad, as a C's fan it is going to be a long year anyway, I thought having Babb on the roster might make it a bit more interesting this year. Maybe they will try to sign him to their D-League team in Maine.

If true, bummer to hear. I'll always root for him.

The D-League rule is NBA teams are allowed to allocate up to three players cut from their NBA camp to their D-League affiliate. So if Babb does sign a D-League contract (way less than overseas) he would, as you said, end up in Maine and not with the Iowa Energy.

I figured this was coming. I flipped between the Celtics game and the World Series last night and never saw Babb check in. He wasn't even sitting on the bench. He was sitting on the court beside the chairs set out for the bench.

With the incumbent veterans such as Brandon Bass, Jeff Green, and Courtney Lee along with Wallace, potentially Humphries (if his expiring deal is not moved), and Bogans, the Celtics have enough veterans.
Not impressed with these vets. They are nice but that is all.

This is what you have to win with? It will take more than this. My take is the luxury tax is killing lots of fringe bball jobs. Is it not the tax three times what you go over the luxury limit? This just means that it is the biggest paid player keeps the little players out of the league and using D League/Euro as the backup plan.

Well, they're not actually trying to win this year, that's part of the problem. I'm sure if this season was about contending and not bottoming out for good picks they'd be less worried about creeping over the tax line if it meant keeping someone that they thought would help win games.

They're not trying to win this year. This year is all about cutting salary and positioning for the draft lottery for the Celts. Next year when they clear a bunch of cap space is when they will likely try to make major roster moves. They're not going to pay any extra luxury tax this year for a 25-30 win team, so fringe players not under contract are going to be cut, that's just the way it is.

I just can't believe they'd keep an extra salary this year with their current franchise situation, but good for Babb apparently making it a tough decision.
That is a million dollar luxury tax penalty. However, if they believe in him, he may be with the team after the rebuild. Of course, Babb is worth more than $2M for a Josh Freeman.

The Celtics have released forward Damen Bell-Holter and guard Kammron Taylor from their training camp roster. Training camp invitees Chris Babb and DeShawn Sims are still on the roster.
....“I'm just kind of waiting to see what happens,â€￾ Babb said. “If it doesn't work out here, I think I put on a pretty good show as far as everybody knows what I do. They got a good look at it through this preseason games and in the game I played pretty well. … If (I don’t make an NBA team), I don't have a problem with playing in the D-League for a year.â€￾

Before he left the TD Garden Wednesday night, Babb walked over to each of the Celtics still sitting at their lockers to personally say goodbye for the evening. He’ll see them at practice, he told them, something he hopes to say on a regular basis this season."

Final Celtics preseason grades: Wallace leads the way

..Best of the rest

" Chris Babb: He is the best shooter on this Celtics squad. But with half a dozen guards on the roster with guaranteed contracts, Babb has little to no shot at sticking with this team. "

Doesn't make much sense if Chris is the best shooter on the Celtics squad and he's a defensive specialist. Wow tough decision for the Danny Ainge. NBA is a long season and Babb could be a great asset to have on such a young team.

The Celtics are in a transition year though. They're going to be wary of any roster moves that cost them flexibility to trade for assets or picks.

That article is a recruiting gold mine.

I would agree that this article should be on a plaque in the Cyclone locker room or on CFH office wall. Hope all you Babb fans get a chance to read it. Here is another quote...

“Chris Babb has been one of the best workers, had one of the best attitudes, and been one of the best teammates in there from day one," head coach Brad Stevens said following Babb’s 12-point showing. "So it's not a shock at all that he went in and did what he did. We have been huge fans of his since he walked in the building."

I agree that Danny would like to have some options and flexibility, there just doesn't seem to be any at this point.

Celtics Acquiring Franchise-Defining Star Will Be Danny Ainge's Toughest Task

" So if Ainge isn't keen on building through the draft and he can't swing a trade like the one that saved the franchise in 2007, that leaves free agency as his only other option.Unfortunately, Boston has always been a notoriously undesirable free-agent destination. Things won't be any more attractive now that there's a brand new, unproven coach at the helm. Toss in a motley cast of unspectacular young players and over-the-hill veterans, and it's going to be more difficult than ever to attract talent. And then there's the ugly financial reality the Celtics are facing. Barring any significant moves to free up money, the team will be over the salary cap both this year and next, which could silence any talk of potential free-agent moves before it starts. If Ainge is going to build the Celtics by signing players, he'll have to make a few moves on the trade market before that can happen. Of all the available routes Boston could take to in its effort to start over, free agency seems to be the least likely. "
