And I understood what you wrote and backed it up with evidence that those recruits should have made us better.

Fact is they didn't. Us fans were correct in out assertion that they should have helped the program improve and win more games.

And you're a little late to the party. Excuses for Mac not winning are not being offered anymore. The general consensus this season sucked and we had every right to expect a better record.

Let's clarify Toasted:

On Sept 1 2009 what reason would me or any other Cyclone fan have to think Gilstrap didn't have the talent to help us win more games than last year?

If that were the point that I was making I would tell you that there was reason to believe that he would get us to 8th place, not 11th.

Since that wasn't the point that I was making, it doesn't matter.

Read back through the thread. You will see that there were posters on here that were trying to position themselves with the idea that somehow these new players will be just what we needed to win games.

I was stating the fact that this is an argument that have been trying to make going on for four years now. All of the people that were going to come in and "save" the program have not panned out. I think, that instead of trying to continue on with that argument, which has continually proven to be false, we should let these recruits come in and play before we assign expectations to them.

Gilstrap was another in the list of people that was going to save the program, and show how great Mac really is as a coach. The same can be said for Laron Dendy.

Maybe this is the group, we won't know until next year. But to continue the same tired argument as a defense, and excuse, for a coach that is floundering is silly.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Never used it as an excuse and I haven't seen anyone else in this thread either.

I refuted you on saying fans were wrong to expect Gilstrap to help us significantly. I did not disagree with what happened this year and that he didn't help.

Again with the lack of comprehension. In this very thread there are posts by Cycloneman003, CyPride, Old Geezer, the obligatory Kg posts.

To be fair, it may not be as blatant as it has been in the past. But that is because people are mad at the losing, and don't want to hear it.

Seriously, if you have this much trouble understanding what is being written, then it isn't fair to argue with you anymore.

Only Oldgreezer said anything and it was that we would be better.

It was you that came in bashing posters for being positive on incoming kids.

I would think that almost every D1 program in the nation has a significant portion of the fan base that is positive about their incoming recruits. They all also have a portion that takes the "I'll believe it when I see it" approach. Anyone trying to label Iowa State as unique in this area doesn't pay attention to what goes on in other programs.

Wow, no comprehension again. It REALLY isn't fair to argue with you.

So I will stop in honor of Forrest Gump week on AMC

Im willing to wait and see what Mac can put together for a class for 2011 to go with Cook, that class has the potential to be a top 25 class nationally.

Are these players being kept quiet?
Our only one signed is Cook (3* rivals, 2* Scout)
Randle is a 4* (both)
The other three listed on Rvials are all 3*
The other 6 listed on Scout are: two 3*, three 2*, and one 1*

I know "stars don't matter" but if we're talking about our class being ranked in the top 25, then yes, stars do matter.

I don't think a 4* Randle and a 2.5* Cook with everyone else worse than that will get us a top 25 ranking.

I hope there's some guys behind the scenes we're talking about.

Ross Travis - Yahoo! Sports
Elgin Cook - Yahoo! Sports
Jacob Williams - Yahoo! Sports
Darell Longstreet - Yahoo! Sports
Chasson Randle - Yahoo! Sports
Andre Henley - Yahoo! Sports
Darnell Harris - Yahoo! Sports

Thats 7 players in the rivals 150 that we have a very strong chance at.

Elgin should be a 4*, minimum....once again, proving that national rankings are full of crap. Wissports.net has him ranked first in 2011 in Wisconsin, and they have seen him play way more, ahead of several guys with high major offers.

And there is a ton of behind the scenes 2011 guys we are looking at.

I'm not saying we don't have good talent coming in. I was just curious. Getting our class ranked in the top 25 has to come from somewhere. And I'm guessing in order to get a Rivals Top 25 class... they probably use their player rankings somewhat.

But hey... I'm always excited for anybody we land. I just was interested in where the top 25 stat was coming from.

Gee I wonder where I have heard this line of thinking before......Oh wait! It was here from this very poster.

All of our guys are great, just pay no mind to the people that are PAID to evaluate players.

This all leads into the same thing that I discussed earlier. Now when everything goes wrong next year, Elgin will be the missing piece that turns everything around.

Ole Roy said he had never had trouble getting players to play hard until this year. And Beilein at Mich. doesn't look too great this year. This thread was critical of the recruits, all I'm saying is maybe they are the kind of players GMcD needs, rather than what he is putting on the floor now. I'm still willing to give them a chance.

The North Carolina comparison doesn't fly. Roy Williams has one two national championships. Greg McDermott has won two Big XII games.

What happened to the "building a program" nonsense that Mac used as an excuse last year. Since that time, he has signed five players, and three are juco's.

It went the way of "McDermott has a very complicated system that takes a very long time to learn, so be patient" excuse. And the "Wayne Morgan drove off all of his players" excuse. And every other excuse which has run its course over the last four years.

Wissports.net, ilprepbullseye, etc. are better than the national guys for one reason:
They see these guys up to 10x per season, and exclusively all summer, whereas the national guys see these guys play one game sometimes.
