Re: Coach Matt A

MattA was willing to hit the planes back East on a non stop basis. His replacement will need to do the same.

If the requirement to fill his position is flight time I think that could be filled rather easily. Who has he brought in from the east coast?

Re: Coach Matt A

I see the legend of TJ Otz is strong in this thread. He was a solid recruiter and a good assistant, but some seem to have a revisionist history of him though.

Re: Coach Matt A

I think the legend of ISU is also a lovely tale. Nobody is a better coach. Nobody has a better program. Nobody would even want to leave the ISU family. Nobody has better fans. Why would anyone want to NOT live in Iowa? Why would anyone NOT want to coach for CFH?

Coaching is a job. Some get their dreams jobs and stay forever. Most everyone else moves a little, gains experience, gains exposure, and looks for opportunities to fulfill personal and professional goals.

All I know is that this year's team really missed Kane and Ejim.

St Johns is a poor dream job from what I've heard. It's not 1985 anymore and the facilities and budget haven't kept up from what I've heard. I'm not sure nostalgia for the old stomping ground should dictate a decision for our coach or Mullen.

You mean you are an ISU fan so YOU can't imagine anyone not wanting to be in Ames.

I'm pretty sure this is what he means:

He might be right or he might be wrong but that's what he means.

Re: Coach Matt A

Dude... Matt is a top notch college recruiter

No. Just no.

He has signed 2 HS recruits since he has been here. Sledge and Okoro. Sledge now plays DII ball and Okoro now averages 2 points in 7 minutes for the worst team in the Big 10. How in the hell does that equate to a top notch college recruiter? He hasn't beat out any schools for any recruit since he has been at ISU. Not one.

I know people like to give him credit for transfers, but those guys are coming to Iowa State because of Fred. He's overrated by the Iowa State fan base and holding Fred back by not being able to bring in high level HS talent.

If he lands Diallo that will obviously change a lot of things. Fred puts him in a unique situation too because he's only going after top tier talent so it makes it more of a challenge.

The underlined statement is crazy. How many high school kids have we actually recruited the last couple of years? I'll give you a hint, not very many, and the one's we are recruiting are elite. It's not easy to get top 10 kids, and the fact we are, and have been, so close to signing one is pretty exciting. To say it's Matt's fault we didn't get Vaughn is pretty unfair. If Matt stays and we don't get Diallo, it would be pretty unfair to blame Matt. I think there were other factors involved in the Vaughn recruitment, and it's tough to beat the UK's and KU's on the recruiting trail. I think Matt's doing everything he can to land one of these types of players, but the fact is, Hoiberg wants to put all of his proverbial eggs in one basket, and so far it hasn't worked out. So to give Hoiberg all the credit for landing transfers, but putting all the blame on Matt for not landing high school kids is pretty ignorant.

Isn't that ISU during the last part of GMac's tenure? CFH came to his alma mater. CFH came into a program starving for success. CFH came into a fanbase remembering the glory years. CFH came into no basketball facilities (when was Sukup built?).

Who knows what motivates people to make a move. Has anyone on this board made a job change for the opportunity to learn and grow in a different location?

Not sure it's blame, but maybe just offering a perspective. One thing we are really good at is perspective when it comes to one of our own.

The poster I quoted stated that Matt is holding Fred back by not being able to bring in high level HS talent.. Sounds like blame to me.

Not that it's some major failure but if you are the lead recruiter on a guy and he doesn't come there, it is on you. Again, that doesn't mean he's not worth employing. It's his job to figure out if guys like that are worth the wait and effort relative to the likelihood that he'll come here.
