Could Iowa State go bowling at 5-7?

ISU is now 5th on the APR pool list, with NW being eliminated and 3 others (AF, LOU, MINN) getting win #6 today.

Rice (5-4)
Wisconsin (5-4)
Temple (3-6)
Boston College (2-7)
Iowa State (4-5)

It seems unlikely that more than two of those would finish 5-7, and it also seems likely that at least three 5-7 teams will be needed for bowls. So I’d say we have a very good shot at bowling if we can just win 1 of the remaining 3.

I’ll still root for Rice and Wisconsin and against BC next week just to be safe.

Northwestern?

The Northwestern doing an imitation of the Northwestern from most of history?

Frustrating that we aren’t already at 6 wins…. Too many bad calls and bounces hit us beyond our margin of error. But there are three games left and we could win or lose any of all of them.

Yeah....I think if yesterday's team shows up (and Okie States yesterday team, lol) we can get to 6.

But gosh, that KU loss especially was ours to win.

And I look back at the missed sack on KSU that they got a deep TD.

Reading through the NCAA rules on this (just in case):

*The "draft" order is set by APR -- tiebreaker is a "count-back" to the previous APR
*If a school declines, the next school is up
*If a school decides to participate in a bowl, the school gets the choice of bowl (provided there is more than one open slot)

Projection Update:

12/27 Iowa State vs. UNLV @ First Responder Bowl in Dallas (S.M.U.'s Stadium)

I think everyone would sign up for that given how poorly Oct went.

Gives us extra practices, probably helps with player retention too. I think 6 W's is out there now.

There's a real shot that 8/10 Big 12 teams will be in bowls last I saw.

One of the NCAA football games from the 2000's had a glitch where there would usually be a team that would go 4-8 or sometimes even 3-9 and be in a bowl. This is the real life version of that.

McMurphy has updated his projections expecting now only three 5-7 teams to go bowling (down from seven last week). But he now projects Iowa State to be one of those three, and ISU would be first off the board among his three projections, since we have the best APR.

It would be a fun bowl, too: Birmingham Bowl vs BYU in a preview of next year’s Big 12.

Interesting. IF we do happen to get to 6-6 looks like based on where he currently projects KU & Texas Tech then we would possibly end up playing in Fort Worth (Armed Forces Bowl) or Dallas (First Responder Bowl). Not sure if Tech will get to 6 wins though.

was thinking about the same thing, its possible we dont end up in a big 12 bowl even if we get to 6-6, but we would have the option of probably 5 or 6 bowls at 6-6 where as if we end up going 5-7 probably 1-2 options tops, I think KU gets selected in front of us this year regardless, they have been a pretty big story so rightfully so...

Honestly I would take that in a heartbeat. Extra practice and he get to play a future Big 12 opponent.

A lot of moving pieces here.

Seems clear that TCU, Baylor, Texas, K-State, and Oklahoma would be ahead of us in the bowl pecking order. That knocks out the Alamo, Cheez-It, and Texas (and maybe the Liberty if TCU does not make the CFP).

The Guaranteed Rate and Armed Forces are probably going to two of Kansas, Oklahoma State, and us. I would assume KU and OSU get those two because KU fans will actually be excited for a 6-6 bowl in Arizona and the Armed Forces will draw local OSU fans in a DFW bowl game.

So if TCU doesn’t make the CFP there’s a solid chance we’d be off of the Big 12 list and left to fill some random bowl opening whether we were 6-6 or 5-7.

honestly dont think I would hate it, we would be towards the top of the 6-6 teams to select and could probably find ourselves another p5 opponent

Isn't UNLV the team we destroyed at the New Allegiant stadium last year?

It looks like this season they're at 4 wins currently with a fair chance of 2 more wins.

But, they've lost badly to anyone with a pulse.

I, for one, would enjoy destroying any opponent in a bowl game. :)

Given the bowls we will play in, I would sure as hell hope we beat the **** out of whomever we play (although, I would doubt X, and probably Will, play in it so maybe that changes things).
