Did you watch them wrestle as true freshmen? Massive jump from their true freshman year to where they are now. Nobody had Evan as an AA last year. The staff did a tremendous job developing him to get him to being at that level

Which one lost to Cory Land At Grandview

I did. Sadly, I’ve not seen a lot this year, mostly because I can’t actually watch them due to the way wrestling is produced (for lack of a better word). All I know this year is that Evan hasn’t been a regular in the lineup, for whatever reason.
He hasn’t?

He has missed what, the Stanford dual plus maybe one or two at collegiate duals? He was sick for NDSU.

Jacob Frost absolutely has developed as well. He was our most of last season (his RS Fr year) with a knee injury.

IIRC neither Frost was recruited by other Power programs very hard. Our coaches identified them and flipped them to ISU. They have both developed a ton since HS.

Losing Yonger this year would have been the equivalent to hypothetically losing Carr to injury last year... It would have killed our chances of a top finish. Injuries happen but when it happens to your top guy it's nearly impossible to overcome at nationals. Injuries happen but unless a team has multiple top 2 type guys the wrong guy getting hurt can kill that seasons hopes.

All that said this team can still surprise some people with the guys that are currently starting. However there is no room for error.

Related to this discussion, and putting on some cardinal-colored glasses, I would see our best lineup as KT, EFrost, AE, PJ, Cody, Euton, MJ, EvanB, Carrol, and YB.

I think that we potentially had the following results:
125 Rd 16
133 AA-5
141 AA-4
149 AA-6
157 AA-8
165 Rd 16
174 Rd16
184 BR
197 2-2
285 AA-3

These are just some hopeful but not totally unreasonable finishes as I see them. This would put us in line for a trophy at #4 (At this time there is a big gap between the top three, PSU, TOE and OKS and the next tier of programs).

With injuries, etc. we are currently down around the 15-20 place teams. I hope that we can still surprise with some individuals, but given the current state of things, I am not hopeful for the team overall, but looking for a few really bright spots come March.

This isn't to add to any substantive discussion.

However, in looking at the brackets from yesterday, Utah Valley has guy named Smokey McClure at 49. Smokey McClure might be one of the coolest names I've ever heard.

Ok. Carry on.

Agreed with everything here.

Add Ech to the list and we are down our top 2 wrestlers. Any team is going to take a hit there.

Fortunately, JFrost and to a lesser extent Herrera have mitigated those losses a bit, though they are not going to be NC contenders like our starters would have been. Also costly is Carroll and MJ not being what we thought. Whether this is because of injuries/weight is anyone's guess, but we don't have great fallback options there.

As far as development, I think the staff has done fantastic. We simply don't have the funds nor the clout to just pick anyone we want like PSU and OKSt. As mentioned, the Frosty's were lightly recruited. I don't believe PJ was ever a state champ in PA. We've done well with the international guys. The 3 highest ranked guys (Chittum, Carroll & Swiderski) all have had to deal with some issues, but are hopefully working through them and will come back strong.
