I agree. It reminds me of the campus town renovations. Sure, it’s great that all this stuff came in, but you completely destroyed what made my memories of the place from when I was in school.

Now with this, maybe the college kids and young adults will create memories with this new Cytown, but it won’t be the same as I remember growing up going to games and tailgating in those lots. I worry that having tailgating pushed further and further out and only available when the weather is dry is going to ruin the entire atmosphere in the name of advancement.
Campustown was/is a dump. What place caters to the nostalgia of people who lived there 40 years ago? lol

Being a resident of Ames for over 30 years, this is not a good idea due to the proximity to the RR tracks along with parking. Even on games days on Saturday, you can’t find parking in downtown Ames. Then you figure in current traffic from Grand to Duff (south Duff is another story) which would get way worse if they went ahead with it.
I like when we plan for days other than gamedays too, when Downtown Ames is completely dead. This needs to be an area people want to be in year round, every day. Districts with all the parking filled are better than lame districts with copious parking.

Yeah, Campustown is a disaster. I mean, I'm sure the students still love it because students usually have no issues with a dive bar. I love dive bars too, but as far as I can tell, there is no place actually nice there. As in, they're ALL dive bars at this point. You'd think with that many people ready to drink at least 4-5 days a week, there would be some ability to build or renovate. Maybe it's the fact that people clear out over the summer hurting any potential business plans? Maybe it's that students can't afford craft beers/drinks or that they are destructive to nice properties? I guess when I come to think of it, Campustown bars cater exclusively to students. You don't get the young professionals there...they go to Main St. Probably pretty tough to make a business based off of domestic drafts and cheap food when the lease/construction prices are that high.

Duff is an absolute cluster ****, even in the summer when 25k students are gone. Couldn't imagine throwing another 40k people out there.
You're either growing or dying.. No middle ground

Ames' population is very grey/white haired... There is not enough young families versus what the employment demand needs..

How may thousands of cars head to Ankeny and beyond every night to pay property taxes, sales taxes, and add school enrollment to other districts?? Has to be in the millions of dollars a year

According to the last census, Ankeny has a higher percentage of population over the age of 65.

assuming you don't live right off the street on Duff between 30 and L.way why the F are you on Duff to begin with. I haven't lived in Ames for 15 years but it was a **** show back then. Take Dayton or one of the other back roads. Duff is Delaware in Ankeny.

Because there are businesses on Duff that sometimes people go to.

If history is any lesson... Ames' no growth, don't change, stop building crowd will do their best to kill this..

I could make the argument that Ankeny has added at least 10K people to it's population, plus all the secondary development because Ames' anti business community opposes growth and propsperity in Ames... The old guard wants to keep it a small town, when it could easily be over 100K people with a more pro-business and development mindset...
News flash: a large part of Ames’ “anti-business” folks are the faculty and staff at Iowa State University. They also have held many spots on boards, commissions and city councils over the years, and like to vote projects down, to keep Ames that “small town.”
Many of them think business growth is ugly.
Example A: the Ames city council that voted down the proposed mall - was comprised mostly by ISU faculty.

Hence why they need to develop other neighborhoods of town, like downtown, Somerset, and CyTown. Sure, most ppl will need to brave a weekly visit to the big box stores on Duff. The other days of the week could be spent in pleasant neighborhood stores, parks, restaurants, and taverns.
