There's no way I'm running that play, needing all of that to go right with just 14 seconds left.
I guess that's why I'm not the Dallas Cowboys' coach though.

That's fair. I'm not sure I would've either; I think two shots to the end zone might have been a better use of time. But I get what they were trying to do. I'd look at it more as everything going wrong and them still almost getting it, rather than everything needing to go right for it to work.

That happened in one of the games yesterday, but not on purpose. I can't remember which one though. That's pretty smart, stick a guy over there and "pretend" to miss.
Smart play would have been to have one of the receivers come back along the near sideline and Dak lateral to them. Coverage would have went to Dak on the run after he crossed the line of scrimmage.

I know it is risky, but I am surprised that the lateral isn't used more.

Everything I've seen from the post game analysis stated that it takes 16-18 seconds to for an NFL team to run play in the field of play, get up to the line, and down it. For Dallas to assume that they could do so with 14 seconds, either means they know something every other NFL team doesn't know, or they were idiots. ...the results seem to indicate the later.

That said, they still weren't going to win the game, but to me running a play that ends the game is inexcusable. This is Paul Rhoads not knowing that he could down the football to win vs. KSU in 2015 bad imho.
Not even close to comparable screw ups.

Ive heard 12-14 seconds in past - it’s completely subjective depending on spot and location. Cowboys thought they could do it and if dak goes down 3 yards sooner and they hand ball to ref, and center snaps it immediately they have enough time. Was it questionable, absolutely but it’s not the worst play call in nfl history like some are saying.

kinda like the purdy fumble in the bowl game though. Gets all the attention as the final play but there was basically no chance of winning prior to that play and just trying to force something.

Cowboys ran it on 3rd and long. Pretty good version of th H&L. Not sure you would need to have anyone there.

Edit- it is illegal to do it too stop the clock so you would have to have a guy there.

Not exactly sure.
The 9ers had to call timeout earlier when they had 12 men on the field. The oldest and I were discussing this and why not just have a couple dbacks deep on the sidelines and just before the cowboys take the snap, run the 2-3 backs on the field. Have your corners play tight so the QB thinks he has a deep ball since he wouldn't know the guys running on the field are taking the deep stuff. Would kill a lot of time and all you lose is five yards. I know there is a risk of a completion, but you have the same amount deep, but you have corners jamming receivers and slowing up the routes. You would burn a lot of time and only give up five yards for too many players on the field.

That would be unsportsmanlike conduct.

UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
Article 11 Using entering substitutes, legally returning players, substitutes on sidelines, or withdrawn players to confuse opponents
Then nearly every sub is unsportsmanlike conduct according to that definition. Don't you try to confuse your opponent? Put a dime package in on first down but blitz three of them? That would be putting subs in to confuse them.

Not sure why everyone calling the play so dumb.

They were on the 40 yard line, SF had 6 players on the sideline, they could not run an out route and there was 15 seconds left. Their chance of a hail mary is maybe 2-5% successful. If he can pick up 15 yards, spike ball - and then run a play from the 25 yard line, i'd guess that odds of a successful TD are 4-5x higher. They don't have the time to run any play short of the end zone either.

It didn't work out... but neither would a hail mary. Perfect execution and it probably would have.

For Cowboys to blame the refs though is stupid. The penalties were just dumb, dumb penalties. Randy Gregory probably holds 4 of the top 5 dumb penalities in Cowboy history.

The play was dumb - the play call assumed everything would go perfectly so they could spike the ball with 1 second left on the clock. That is a terrible assumption to make when your season is on the line. But what was even dumber was how the Cowboys didn’t even know how to act when the play was over, ensuring they would never even get the chance to kill the clock with 1 second left.

Dak is really an overrated QB, put him on many teams in the league, and he would be looking over his shoulder at the backups. But since he plays for Dallas, many think he is right there with Mahomes and Rodgers, move like the guy in LV.

If the Cowboys didn't play in the worst division in football with three teams run by complete dipshits, they wouldn't have even made the playoffs. They aren't good and are going to sit there and waste what's left of Amari Cooper and all of CeeDee Lamb's careers with Dak.

It had nothing to do with the refs. The organization and coaching stinks.

This.

looked at their schedule, Dallas had 3 wins vs teams that made the playoffs and 2 of those were from beating Philly twice. Niners had to play 4 games against quality competition from within conference in LAR and Arz plus had games vs Cincy, GB, Tenn. Going against Dallas was a piece of cake.

Exactly. NFC East was complete garbage and the Cowboys pulled a hok move to win the division and host a playoff game. DId not help them when they played an actual good team.

Dak is a total bum and extremely overrated. Really, so is that whole Cowboys team. The whole bit about the horrible division they plan in is spot on. However, didn’t they beat someone on the road this year though when Dak wasn’t even playing?
