even if BF was taking reps from young, young would have been a great 1B. good teams have a lot of depth. ISU is a few injuries away from being in a bad spot at the safety position.

Disagree a little there. I mean, sure, to some degree but we're one injury away from having a completely unproven QB. We're an injury away from who the heck knows who at center. Again, hopefully neither happens but I think compared to some positions we actually I think have decent guys who would be inexperienced, yes, but can step in at safety

Based on the twitter reaction from Iowa State teammates, McDonald's transfer was a surprise to the program.
In my opinion, which isn’t much I know, McDonald was by far the biggest surprise and loss. That said, I REALLY like our DBs now. Can’t wait to see them on the field, and I’m especially interested in Porter and Verdon.

Losing Isheem hurts. Even as good as Fryler appears to be, can you imagine a back field with him, Isheem, and Ant Johnson?

Opposing WRs would be mortified.
I think RBs would terrified of Young. He supported the run like a monster but he was really struggling in coverage the last half last year. I was a lot more disappointed by McDonald. I think he was a better fit for what ISU needs out of their safeties. They get asked to do a ton and are always stressed. I think AJ is going to be great there.

With the right role and defense Young will be great though. He’s a monster.

Agree. Young is a LB in a S body. Love how he supports the run, but as you and others have said, he was starting to get exposed in the pass game quite a bit. I also agree with the other poster who brought up concussions when talking about Isheem. I don’t remember him ever being taken out with concussion, but there were times I didn’t think he looked “right” out there after a couple big hits. He wasn’t really wrapping up either. Just throwing his body around like a projectile.

I know it looked like we lost a ton of production from the secondary but I don't know that it was much of a loss. I always felt the secondary was soft last year and got beat more often than any other spot. Each individual has strengths and weaknesses but I think the combination of weaknesses in individuals added up to several big plays for opponents when we needed them the least.

That being said we did have one of the top defenses last year so maybe I just thought they were soft because the rest of the defense was so stout.

As I understand it, Young played the same position as Freyler. Freyler was just plain better by the end of the year. McDonald had a good chance to start though, so that was unfortunate.
Young was an enforcer for sure, but he got absolutely lost on coverage on long TDs in a couple games last year that we should not have lost.

Isheem was a loss, but he was much better against the run than the pass. I remember against Oklahoma State last year at the end of the first half Sanders threw a bomb against 2-man coverage; the receiver came down with it in the end zone and it was an amazing play by him, but Young really should have been able to break that up. I think the receiver was like 5'8.

He is a fun player to watch, and if he improves that part of his game then he should be a day 2 NFL pick.

That is some good info. Hard to believe it will not be more than a hiccup. Hard to believe there is not an unstated issue here.
My interpretation is this:

Isheem was a bit of a head case and didn't truly buy into the culture. Was getting by on talent alone
McDonald only bought into the culture enough to get noticed, then he chased money

The rest of the guys weren't good enough and got recruited over.

I feel like they would have found a spot for Young to start, even if it was at SAM LB. But I have zero doubt that Freyler is the better all around player. McDonald is the bigger loss IMO. If he were still here, we would have by far the best Safety group we've had under Campbell. They'll still be pretty good, but they are now depending on a RSFR and a JUCO transfer to play.
