I stand by the fact that there are too many.
Anyone know when they started using media timeouts at 16/12/8/4? I concur that there are way to many. As anyone who sits next to me at football games can attest to, I hate when there are extensive media timeouts at football games.

The fix:
1) No dress code. Encourage EXTREME creativity. I still don't know what wearing the same shirts has to do with noise level, other than keeping people who don't want to pay an extra $10-15 from having the opportunity at sitting in the first 2-3 rows.
2) Intermix the students throughout the arena. I just don't, unfortunately see that happen again, and it is really a ****-poor excuse that the general public needs the students sitting next to them to feel like they have to participate.
3) More pregame drinking. I'm hoping to get more drinking time in before games come conference time, it just isn't happening right now though. Not with so much goin on that is just not condusive to drinking.
4) Destroy the video board. Destroy the stupid friggin games.
5) Que the band not the stereo I concur
6) BRING BACK THE HAMM'S BEER SONG (might single handedly restore Hilton Magic)+1 to this as well

yeah actually I wanted to wear a Beat Nebraska shirt left over from the origional Golden Rules game when we had played Nebraska earlier that year. Was not allowed.

It's not to say I didn't wear my own outfit, but to say I had as much room to be creative in Cyclone Alley as I did when I wasn't is a tall order to fill.

I've seen both Cyclone Alley / General Student section, and all Cyclone Alley. Back when i had a choice I took General Student section over Cyclone Alley, even though I paid for Cyclone Alley and could have sat there. It was more fun in GA

As I said above, I just don't know what you wear has to do with being creative and making noise. I respect you and you are one of my favorite fans that I have ever been around (although I don't know you personally). But the fact that having to wear the same shirts reduces noise just doesn't fly with me.

Well I believe the students are the most important part of the environment so I think rearranging the crowd would rejuvenate everything from crowd noise. Hell, more people may donate because they will be afraid of losing their seats. The games are on mediacom, if they want to watch a game quietly and tell people to sit down I would gladly tell them where to put their money. People don't donate because of their great seats and if they do, they need to make donations higher in order for it to make sense to not try to change something at Hilton crowd wise. I don't know what they should do but when people get comfortable so does everyone else including the opposing team.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and you are right students are an important part of the success and the crowd.

However, you are really off base on the donors, their motivations, and what they do pay. Right now donors are paying premium pricing for seats and maintained their donations despite the last few years teams.

Actually CStrunk yes there are rules about students being drunk in the student section, and they were enforced for a while. Even if they aren't as strictly enforced the culture has already been changed
I promise to be drunk for the Texas game.

I know there are "rules" about it. But ****, as a college kid, rules are meant to be broken! If a student goes out and has half a dozen beers or a few mixed drinks before a basketball game to get loosened up, I don't see how anyone would ever know. Like I said, they would have to do something VERY outrageous or stupid before ever getting in trouble by going to a basketball game drunk in the student section.

I have never seen anything that would really stop any college student from drinking before (even during if they were smart about it...) a basketball game.

It's not that hard to bring alcohol into Hilton. I've done it many times any NEVER have I had any trouble.

I love pumping up the burrito. I love the west towne pub song. I love the applebees shuffle. I love the build a burger. I love the lay up contest. I love the Delta Dental smile cam. I love that every 4 minute timeout another donor is recognized. I love the fact that 90% of the crowd doesn't even remember the score by the time the teams come back onto the floor. I love that Hilton has become more of a big top carnival than a basketball game. It's great that fans now feel like they're watching TV because every time the actual show isn't on they watch a commercial.

It's not ALL cyclone ally, and I get that we need to pay the bills. But honestly, a lot of Hilton Magic will not be back because we can't afford to not act like a freaking circus to pay the light bill and keep up with the other Big 12 athletic budgets.

Cyclone Alley isn't loud, but neither is the rest of the stadium and it's because with all the other crap going on no one remembers there is even a game going on.

If you sit in CA bring some drunk friends too. Is it just me or are the college students way too sober at games? Did school get tougher? Are there tests on Saturday now? Is everclear that expensive? Is the cool thing now Amp or Red Bull? I am lost.

Are you guys serious? The TV timeouts is a world wide thing. Not just Iowa State...happens during all college basketball games, including ones not on TV. Hell don't even high school games have them after the 4 min mark? When we play on the road, we need those tv timeouts. Get real

Cyclone Alley brought order to chaos. The thing is, why would you want to do that? I believe this is year 5 of CA and it has changed the culture of our student section to the core. I just hope that we can change it back, because we just kicked some hawk butt and Hilton was dead!

Thank you. My point exactly. The "games" / commercials have 90% of the fans duped. They think they are great, yelling for the #2 shell game, or pumping a burrito. But, it seriously is BRUTAL to sit through a game any more. Everytime I get fired up some ad comes along and knocks me into apathy.

I'm not saying it's the only factor but there was a difference that is hard to explain between the side of students that all wore the same shirt and the side that had unique outfits.

There are other issues with the shirts besides probably stifiling creativity, but I need to be up really early and i've outlined those points way too much in previous debates about this.

By all means I'm not blaming the death of Hilton on the students all having to wear the same shirt... but for as great of an idea as it was (I do like having a unified color), there are issues with it.

Like I said given a choice between CA and GA, I took GA, and it wasn't just because of shirts, it was because of atmosphere. And that was BEFORE CA cracked down on rules

I see it as my civic duty to do just this! I will need ideas on what to drink though.

Something that can be put in a flask or comes in a plastic bottle and can be mixed with Coke.

I also know people in the North West balcony liked to sneak in little 1oz bottles and leave them every game... though I don't recommend those if you want to actually get a buzz (You'd have to come in hammered and use those to keep it going)

Not that I neccasirly advocate drunkeness at basketball games... but if you're going to do it, do it right

+1.

Especially since basketball is played during winter, when it's really ******* cold out, it's NOT hard to bring in your own bottle of Coke mixed to your liking.

I'm almost convinced that the vendors should start spiking the soda that they sell in order to get the atmosphere in Hilton changed.

This is a good idea. Right up until you end up with 5 year olds smashed to pieces. :biglaugh:
