The punt return fair catch thing seems overstated to me. There aren't a lot of punts returned by any team. I would love to see the numbers on that. It's something our fanbase has complained about for years, but I think it mostly stems from ignorance and a fantasy of having Devin Hester back there.

I watch a ton of football, and I find it pretty rare to see fair catches when the defenders aren't even close yet.

Given 2020 did not count toward eligibility... we technically only have 6 players on the Off / Def depth chart with only 1 year of eligibility remaining (there are 3 on ST):

Foster
Allen
Uwazurike
Hummel
Eisworth
Amos

Technically, the rest could run it back... expect guys like Hall, Purdy, Rose, Kolar, etc. to look at their options / leave before their eligibility expires... but still, 36 of 56 guys on the OFF/DEF two deep have 3-4 yrs of eligibility remaining. That's 64%!

This "extra" year I believe will continue to be beneficial for developmental programs like ISU for the next several years...

If you look at the LB corps for example, Davis (RS SO) / Horne (RS SO) each still have 4 yrs of eligibility left if they choose to use them. Vaughn (RS JR) has 3. So, if all three of them are starting next season, they will each have 2-3 yrs left, but they will each also have 3-4 yrs in the program...

Nice use of a qualifier there at the end. Like I said, would love to see the numbers

That's a pretty important qualifier. Hardly anyone wants their returners grabbing one in traffic and taking off, so the ones that out kick the coverage, and are still fair caught (or not) are the ones that have to differentiate the policies.

Very cool to Porter and Noel in the 2 deep receivers spots. Those guys are burners and going to be really fun to watch someday.

Not gonna lie or even attempt to deny it. If, If, IF they trot Darien Porter out to return Punts or Kick Offs I will absolutely geek out. Ever since I watched him run that 400 at the state track meet I have felt Iowa State has to find a way to get that kid on the field. Obviously Xavier Hutchinson is the real deal, but I would bet Porter will be on the field often next year and the coaches have to find a way to get this kid the ball in open space.

That's the point. There aren't a lot of punts that allow returners to take off. It's like that for every team. Milton returns it when he has space. It's just a difficult job.

Kolar can STILL technically come back one more year? Sheesh.

I can’t envision him returning again barring an injury scenario. He already has nearly left twice, and looks like a guy who likely will be picked at least in round 3 of the draft.

Jared Rus at fullback. And I don't think we are underestimating Schweiger, we are just saying that the o-line is THAT good. Honestly I think that Remsburg has huge potential. Simmons as well if he can cut down on the penalties. But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised in Schweiger was a starter.
I guess I’d consider Rus as a specialist of sorts.

But it’s definitely a positive sign of the times for this program. There was absolutely a time when our starting lineups were filled with walk ons, 2 star players, and transfers that were more less just castoffs from “higher prestiged” schools.

Schweiger has definitely proven his worth, though. I think it is healthy to have a few success stories like that on the roster.

We have the 2nd least amount of punt returns in the big 12 the last two years despite having one of the best defenses. Idk that proves much but by having one of the better defenses, we are likely near the top in forced punts but always near the bottom in actual returns.

Nationally:
Eisworth was our leader in '20 with 5 returned punts. Good for 87th nationally. In '19, Milton had 7 which didn't make the top 100. He was 71st in '18. Trevor Ryen was the PR prior to that, he finished 31st in '17 and in the 80s the previous two years. So only one time under CMC have we had a guy finish in the top 50 in punt returns. Hard to think that's simply a coincidence.
