Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

Not at all to me... And the tarnishing of this guys reputation based off rumors and reports by some of you is downright embarrassing for this fan base. This is no surprise, we all have known Fred would be in the NBA at some point and would not be finishing his career here. Sure, he said he would love to finish his career here, but anyone with half a brain knew that was not going to happen. Fred is leaving this program in pretty damn good shape, and he is setting the next coach up better then any I can recall in college basketball. Sure we missed out on a few recruits and lost a player because of this, but that was going to happen no matter when Fred left. If Fred returns next year, and then heads to the NBA with a down year coming and 5-7 scholarships that need to be filled by a new coaching staff, that would be detrimental to the program. Instead, he is leaving us with a stacked team, and 2 open schlorships. The guy is making sure the program is in a MUCH better spot then when he got it, he has taken us to 4 straight NCAA tournies, he got us 2 straight Big 12 tourney wins, and has put this program into the national spotlight more then it ever has been.

The fact that some of you want to tarnish this guy is pathetic. Fred did nothing but increase his legacy these past five years, and what he has done here has earned him a coaching job in the NBA. Some of you need to get over it and be happy for the guy. If this is his dream, then good for him for going from nothing to this in 5 years.

Well said. I'm with you!

Way too early to say. Might depend on the program's trajectory in the next 2-5 years.

I agree once we get a new coach we should be fine next year but if the new coach can't get players in and ISU basketball goes back down hill that will hurt his legacy it all comes down to the next 5 years. If a new coach can keep it going it will not hurt him but if ISU basketball goes down hill that is on Fred for leaving and I'm sure he would be mad at himself if ISU goes down hill. It's all on what happens in the next 5 years. I grew up watching Hornacek at ISU and would love to see him come home.

Here nor there
The more we learn the more it looks as though Fred and ISU should have parted ways in March IMO.

Fred was a great player and coach for ISU that had a more damaging departure than Chizik.

I don't think Ann Campbell's legacy will change much now that the other mayor has abdicated.

His legacy will be ok if JP doesn't screw it up with the next hire. If the next coach can build on what Fred has done, he will be viewed as the guy who came back and rebuilt the program. If it falls back to the mcdoormat years it will be a blip on the radar like when Floyd was here.

How is this on JP. Fred Hoiberg was in a unique position to take ISU to the next level. Chances are there is no one that can have the same impact on ISU Basketball going into the future that Fred could have. Maybe Jeff Hornacek but that hire might not even be a possibility. If the program slowly fades back to average or if it crashes and burns thats still on Fred. If the program continues as is or takes another step forward consider ourselves lucky.

Well, that was a kick in the nuts. Any word on how the players are taking it? I suppose we know why we didn't land the last couple of recruits. I have no words. He went out wetting the bed. I would have never imagined that in my wildest nightmare.

No it doesn't change. He is a legend and always will be. I hope he succeeds and is one of the best NBA coaches

He has no legacy. He only coached for five years and one Sweet 16. He could have had one, and I believe much of the fan base EXPECTED that to happen, but honestly he didn't stick around long enough for anyone to see what his legacy would be.

Not if JP makes another disaster hire like McDermott

Found the guy that's only been a fan for the last 4 years.

It obviously changes it, but it doesn't erase him from the history books. Every program bounces back from things like this and we are in a better spot to do so than we have ever been in before.

I'm not sure about other fanatics but I grew up watching Fred and following his career. I had his jersey and wore it all the time. Twitter is buzzing tonight and seems like there could be fall out to his legacy with the way this whole offseason has played out. I'm interested on how this will play out to the fans and how this affects the "mayor" status. I guess time heals all wounds but the initial reaction has been about what is expected.
Your legacy is defined at the end of your time in a place so obviously this affects it. It ENDS it. There will be no more opportunity for Fred to add to what he has accomplished at ISU. His legacy might have been added to with years of additional successes. Instead it stands as what it is today. Fred leaving now is like if LeBron loses in the NBA Finals this year and then leaves again in free agency or retires. Hometown boy that did great things but didn't finish the last chapter to the storybook ending; a whole lot of "what could have been".
