Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

Obviously effects it. Hell he was on pace to be coaching in Hoiberg colliseum in 10 years. The question is will the fallout diminish or taint it. I don't think so.

This. The question is to what extent will it damage/diminish it. There is no question of changing it.

Absolutely it changes. But it won't necessarily be bad. He's still the Mayor and he still resurrected Hilton Magic. If he does leave, it'll depend on what happens next to determine the rest.

His best move is to justcome clean and issue a statement: "Cyclone nation, at 42 when mortality stares you in the face grown men sometimes do silly things . Some people cheat on their wife, others just explore and engage in risky behavior and some buy a sports car. I cheated on my school and I did it with a big hairy bovine. I am ashamed. Please forgive me #midlifecrisis"

Either way of course it will change his legacy.. Even if he stays. But if he leaves and the program stays where it's at or gets better he will have the legacy of turning us around. If it plummets after next few years then it will be similar to Eustacy and maybe not even held in such high reguard being the lack of banners and him abandoning the program. I realize we are better over a longer period of time but LE had the two best seasons to date.

Someone who turned the program around for four pretty good years and left still doesn't scream "legacy" to me though.. That's been done. I personally hold that word in a much higher regard.

When/If he leaves I can get over him going to the NBA. What will be hard to get over is him interviewing for many NBA jobs and what he has said in the past about being in Ames and the coach of ISU.

Easily. Fred is dead to us now. I hope the Bulls go 11-69 next year. He'll be back soon enough like Tim Floyd. Book it.

Their season is going to be so bad the NBA is going to schedule 2 fewer games for them than every other team.

If he had been able to keep it wrapped up that he was leaving, then no I don't think so. However, this has been a dragged out process. The leak about telling Diallo he couldn't commit, the quotes from him after signing the 10 year deal saying it was his dream job, and (quoting Thomas) telling the team he would be there next year kind of have to change it some.

everything he's done for the program the last few years has been incredible, so it does depend on how the program does after. If he leaves, and it crumbles, then yeah, his legacy will take some heat (on the flip side argument to that, it would make him look all that better as a coach)

Very disappointing to hear he explored the Orlando job... Like others said, I can understand the allure of Chciago or Minnesota given his past, but exploring the Magic position makes all of the "ISU dream job" speech he gave last year seem really hollow.....I said he was leaving after Matt A left and TJ came back, but I thought only for Chciago.....

I would like to add, maybe the college game is boring to Fred. Short season, playing some bad teams, playing average coaches. The NBA will challenge him more.

it is more of a what could have been than ruining anything he has done. He will have a good legacy here, but he had a chance to be our Izzo, Bo Ryan, or coach K. He could have been the only one to surpass Johnny's legacy. That won't happen now.

Good point. I will cherish the last 5 years knowing he brought the Magic back. A record 4 straight NCAA appearances. Among many other accomplishments. He will always be my favorite Cyclone basketball coach, or maybe a tie with Johnny. Even though I'm sure we'll wonder what could have been...he'll always be the "Mayor" to me.

I can only speak for myself....

I was a young kid when Hoiberg played at ISU, we had lower level season tickets for years and didn't miss a game..as a young kid Hoiberg was a "God". I still have multiple autographs from when I was a kid and have them framed and the memories with my parents combined with ISU can't be replaced.

When Fred was hired I was pumped because I saw him as "one of us" and a guy who knew the history and would always look out for ISU and our fans, combine that with his comments throughout the years about retiring here and his dream job (right or wrong on looking too much into it...I'm a fan)

For me his legacy is not the same if he leaves now, I always thought he was the guy who eventually move to the NBA after achieving things he talked about . If this is what he wants I don't blame him... With that said...It's insane how low our expectations are.. Compared to many successful teams we haven't accomplished much(a good friend of mine is a KU fan and he's ****** about last year..it's all relative)

The worst part for me is just how entertaining hoiball is, there aren't many things I put ahead of others but ISU bball has been just that.

Maybe Fred wanted to bring the magic back to the magic. I don't know...it's all I got.

I'll apologize ahead of time for putting this here, because I really don't want to hunt through another long thread nor start a new one, but does anyone think the UAB loss was a real eye opener, much less a gut wrenching loss, and it actually was a big reason for speeding up the desire for Fred to begin the NBA dream? Or was it inevitable to happen this soon anyway? Thoughts?

In the short term the legacy could seem tarnished to a few.

However, time will add perspective and we'll realize he's still one of ours
