Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

I'll apologize ahead of time for putting this here, because I really don't want to hunt through another long thread nor start a new one, but does anyone think the UAB loss was a real eye opener, much less a gut wrenching loss, and it actually was a big reason for speeding up the desire for Fred to begin the NBA dream? Or was it inevitable to happen this soon anyway? Thoughts?

No, I think Fred expected this to be his last season for quite some time, and I think that made the loss that much more painful to him as I think he expected a deep tourney run and to go out on a high note

I very rarely "speak" on here. I tend to read and try to get some insight on what others feel about Iowa State athletics. I had decided to keep my mouth shut about this whole Fred to Chicago thing and how he might have some interest from Minnesota. I could deal with these inquiries. I can deal with Fred looking around and seeing what his options were. What I can't deal with is his "interview" with Orlando. You tell your employer and fans/donors nothing for the last 2 weeks and now it's discovered you have interviewed with the Magic?
I have had season tickets for football for 19 years now. (call me a fool) I get to around 10 home basketball games per year. (I do not have season tickets to basketball) I do donate. Not a large amount but a large enough amount in my eyes. I have no problem with Fred wanting to achieve his dream. I have no problem with Fred wanting best for him and his family. What I do have a problem with is Fred taking ISU for a ride the last few weeks. If by chance he has interviewed with Orlando, then he has LIED to the ISU faithful. That bothers me. I will say this though. If you want to look out for your best interest Fred, make sure to look out for your employers best interests also. I have hired and fired many over the years who I have felt were looking out for their own best interest and not the company's. It's obvious to me Fred that you could give to ****s about the employers interest all while they have been trying to look out for your best interests.
Let us all hope this works out for you Fred. If by chance and you want to come back to ISU, you will not have my support nor a lot of other fanatics. I do believe you might have burned all of your bridges. That's sad. You have a great family that you might have just ****ed over sir. Be happy with your decision sir.

I appreciate your candid response. And you might be right. The only thing is... that I know someone who has worked for the program and they always talked about as early as two years ago how the best team was going to be the 2015-16 team, as if the blueprint was being made for a championship caliber team. Not that it's just that easy, but I felt all the staff was working and believing of great things to come. Now Matt is gone...and probably Fred. Strange how things happen sometimes, I guess. (P.S. I'm not suggesting that the 2015-16 isn't going to still be the best)

With all due respect, because obviously this is a touchy subject, where or why are you suggesting he "lied" due to the Orlando interview? Just curious. Guess I've never read or seen him actually asked, or denied, if he's interviewed anywhere before, including Golden State last summer.

Interesting that no media has ever asked these questions before.

what you say makes perfect sense, as I agree that 15-16 was on paper ( and probably internally expected) to be the best chance at winning.... My only guess is Fred wanted to leave ISU before a rebuild year, so the fan base and new coach would not suffer too much with his departure ( i think he really does love ISU and knows how much this hurts all of us who love him as coach)....I think he really expected a nice tourney run this year and than to pass an even better team on to "whomever"- appears to be TJ, and ride off to the NBA.....and then the UAB disaster really threw a cog into those plans....and here we are....

The worst thing for me is how we lost a chance at Diallo ( we were trending as the favorite or co-favorite) and ultimately lost Williams, who many were high on due to his failure to commit to ISU for 15...both would have made us SO much better for next year....

If he stays, there will be a Hoiberg statue in front of our future basketball arena in 50 years. There won't be one if he leaves, so absolutely his legacy changes from this.

Personally, I'm all over the place. One day I'm mad, the next day I'm cool with it, only to be mad again the next day.

I have to remind myself that the man did put off heart surgery to finish coaching last season.

I was questioning his loyalty yesterday, today I don't know what to think.

This just needs to end. It just plain sucks.

This stings worse than any past ISU sting. Absolutely used and abused our university. Screwed over the players and our chances at Williams and Diallo among other transfers that would have helped out this year. Now mccay and other post players will be forced to play extra minutes because of lack of transfer help. I truly believe this deal was done months ago. Team got wind of it before the tournament game. Team looked against uab like they had been punched in the gut.

Not his legacy but it changes the perception of him. Jumping to the Bulls or Wolves is understandable. Being wowed by a great opportunity like Billy Donovan and the Thunder is too. But the Magic? And him telling people in April that he's gone if he gets an offer? Yes, it changes the perception of him.

In the end, this was just "a job" - and not one that he wanted that badly.

Yes, absolutely. Just like when LeBron took his "talents to South Beach". He did it for all the reasons that people find disgusting deep-down. This just makes it feel "cheap", like we were "used" for 4-5 years until something else came along even though we were told he'd love us forever. (Anybody have any Pamprin or Midol?)

Some will say yes and some will say no, I know WOW right? Opinions are like ******** everyone has one. For me I just don't invest much into ISU athletics anymore and get upset like I used to what's the point?

Actually what I don't like is if Otz is appointed the head coaching position without much if any competition. I could care less about Freds rush to the NBA. He is only human.

it is more of a what could have been than ruining anything he has done. He will have a good legacy here, but he had a chance to be our Izzo, Bo Ryan, or coach K. He could have been the only one to surpass Johnny's legacy. That won't happen now.

This.

And

Interviewing with the Magic only means they contacted him. It doesn't mean he was interested. Could have been like the time share pitch and he got free Disney tickets for the family...

It does for me. He will never be the mayor again. it feels like we have all been played and bought into this "dreamy" thing that he can do no wrong. He has open to us with his family (twitter etc), why he loves/d ames, his (former) passion for ames and iowa state, then he does his dancing- we all love the guy.
i don't anymore- he is just another guy. he has used iowa state and i feel lied to iowa state- see the 10 yr contract and words he used "dream job" etc. to find out he interviewed with orlando...that was the last straw. doesn't appear that isu, players, fans were really that important to him. he would make a great politician, and that's not a compliment.
