He freely picked a horrible situation. It sucks but I just don’t see them being better without a tanking type of rebuild. Coaches don’t survive those types of rebuilds.

I still don’t understand his reasons for leaving for this situation, but can only imagine that this shows how truly miserable he was at the college ranks and the current ‘shady’ college recruiting racket.
I talked to Fran Frachilla (sp?) for a long time in KC a few years ago. As you would expect, real nice guy. Anyway, he said Fred’s goal was to be an NBA GM and he needed to get his ticket punched as a NBA head coach. Take it for what it’s worth.

He knew he was heading into somewhat of a rebuild, but he misjudged the competence of GarPax.

They’re still years away, I’m rooting for him but I don’t know how he survives it. Hopefully another NBA team will take a chance on him.

He KNEW them intimately as a player and as an exec who didn't make timberwolves very good btw...

You don’t have to be a coach to be a GM. He was already on a fast rack in MInnesota’s front office to being a GM before coming to ISU. Not looking to argue about what Fred wanted.

How dare Fred have personal goals

He wasn’t doing that. He was saying that he was already on that track. Coaching didn’t have to be a part of that. How many GMs were coaches?

Fred wanted out. His side spinned it a certain way. Many believe the spin.

Fred wanted to make a lot of money in a short period of time so he could set his family up and be done with coaching

Fred kind of fell into the same trap as Tim Floyd did with the Bulls. Got hired by a buddy in the front office who told them they would build a roster they could win with and neither front office gave them much of a chance to succeed with the players they gave them to work with. Tim's initial roster was way worse than the one Fred inherited but the common theme with both is the front office has no vision and plan in place to do a quick rebuild on the roster and can't attract the premium free agents.

I loved John Paxson as a player, he hit one of the biggest shots in Bulls history to win a championship but he's failed as a front office guy. It looked like they were on the right track when they had that good team of Rose, Deng, and Noah but he never made the big moves to make that team a serious contender then wound up with little to show for when those guys got hurt and were traded or walked during free agency. I think he did make out OK on the Butler trade so far but the roster is still a mess. I've been a Bulls fan all my life, more of a casual NBA fan lately though but I'm at the point that when they fire Fred GarPax needs to go with him and they do a complete reset in how that franchise is run. The Bulls build an international brand with Jordan and were a team everyone wanted to play for back in the 90's but now they are going down that same dangerous path the Knicks did where they are a big market team that no one wants to play for.

I can see Fred in a NBA GM role some day but I would love for him to be the next Athletic Director at Iowa State when Pollard is done. I hope that is not anytime soon but I think Fred would be a perfect fit in that job. I agree with you, I don't know if this coaching thing is his long term goal or not.

I don’t know if I see him as an AD. He doesn’t like to suck up to people and that’s an AD job. Raising money is like recruiting. If you believe the spin, Fred hates recruiting so why bother.

I think his talent is in college coaching. I think he’ll decide it’s worth the recruiting headache and he’ll go back to it.

Have any of you been following the Bulls? I’ve watched a few of their games this year, off to a rough start, but he’s got a young team. I supported Fred chasing his dreams going to the NBA, but Chicago forums are calling for his head. Any idea of what his future looks like?
Just like the Tim Floyd situation, this was beyond predictable.

Fred’s contract clearly suggested Fred eventually wanted to be in the NBA. Goals evolve and change. Imo Fred accomplished his primary goal at ISU and moved on to his NBA aspirations. That could include being a GM at some point.

He’s not doing this just for the money- he could have gotten that anywhere. Life’s too short to be the Bulls coach just for money when you already have millions and are making millions.

He couldn't have gotten 25 mill for 5 years anywhere else besides coaching

Like I said- he’s not doing this (coaching the bulls) for the money. He’s coaching the Bulls because he prefers the NBA. He could have been paid a lot of money for a less involved job, and maybe he will once fired.

Most don’t coach or work for free, as far as I know.

He really kind of is which is why you'll see he won't be a HC anywhere again after he gets fired. He would have been paid WAY less for a less involved job

I mildly follow Fred not because of what he's doing now, (as we can predict the outcome) but rather looking for indicators of where he'll go next.

He's coaching in the NBA because he got tired of the dirty recruiting game.

(Rashad Vaughn, Abdul Malik Abu, Jaylen Johnson, Kyle Kuzma, etc.
Vaughn- paid by UNLV for sure
Malik Abu- NC State named as cheaters
Johnson- Louisville named as cheaters
Kuzma-named in Adidas trial
