OK, time for my Sigmapolis post:
As a kid, I was a
very picky eater. Plain hamburgers. (Not even cheese!) Mashed potatoes with butter. (No gravy!) Vegetables? Ugh. Potato salad, coleslaw, any nut other than a peanut, etc.
Now I love veggies - still not too keen on Brussels sprouts, but the vixen has a great recipe on the grill with bacon and onion - of all kinds. Cauliflower is my favorite (cooked or raw), but also broccoli, turnips, parsnips, carrots, onions (as a kids onions made me retch), zucchini, squash, beets, bring 'em on. Although I'm still not fond of radishes.
There were never too many types of meat I didn't like. We weren't all that well off when I was little, so my Mom had to make do with lots of cheap cuts of meat. She could take those tenderized minute steaks (which are, in fact, glorified gristle painted red) and somehow make them fork tender. She could also make gravy out of some rainwater and a couple old shoestrings, and it tasted fabulous.
I was fortunate in that my Mom and both grandmothers were fantastic cooks and bakers. So I was spoiled in terms of food.
One meal that I specifically remember as being the all-time worst ever was liver & onions and lima beans.
G-a-a-a-a-a-g me. Still won't eat liver.
Of course my Dad was an inveterate hunter and fisherman, so I grew up eating venison, rabbit, pheasant, duck, and all kinds of freshwater fish.
I also vividly remember potluck dinners at church as a kid. In later years I would talk about this topic and the person(s) i was/were with would comment that they didn't know what a potluck dinner was. I always felt sorry for those people.
