Thanks so much to @Farnsworth for this one!

He was watching Ozark and saw them making Slammers, and it made him think:

“I Never ________ As A Kid.”

For example, I am going to take one of his - I have never seen a Pog, I don’t know what they are, and I don’t care. They were everywhere in the late 90s and I just nod if anyone brings it up.

What are some childhood experiences universal to your era that you either missed or avoided?

Smallpox vaccine.

I'm definitely in the era where I should've received it and the badge of honor to prove it.

I don't have the scar and don't have memory of receiving it, though I can remember my classmates lined up and receiving a vaccine while I sat and waited. At the time I was having thyroid issues and was being regularly seen by a panel of doctors to figure out what was going on. I have faint memory of my parents being told to hold off with the vaccine until they (the doctors) knew more about what was going on with me.

I was of the prime age to be into pogs (born in '85), but absolutely no one in my school had them. I saw them on TV and in magazines, but never played with them once.

I never mowed as a kid.

Don't get me wrong, my parents had no problems putting me to work in the garden, weed eating, taking out trash, etc. They both had "inside" jobs so Dad always liked mowing. (Probably because he had a rider and could have a beer, LOL)

Pro wrestling is a big one for me.

I was a kid in the 90's, and we lived on a farm that was 13 miles away from the town I went to school in. We didn't have a satellite dish, so we only got 6 channels (KIMT, KAAL, KTTC, Fox 47, Iowa Public Television, Minnesota Public Television). Most of my buddies lived in town, and the ones who didn't had satellites, so they all had the cable channels. I'd get to school and they'd be talking about what happened in the WWE and what not, and I was just totally out of that loop.

On a similar note, I didn't get to watch MTV much either, and didn't have the attachment to music videos that most Xennials do. I did see more of them because any time I was at a place that had cable, you could put MTV or MTV2 on and watch videos. So I was less out on those than I was wrestling, but it was somewhat similar.

I never got a rock tumbler as a kid.

Who else remembers looking through the Sears/JCPenney Christmas Catalog and thinking that looked so cool and circled it or put it on your list, with page number?

Come to think of it, I don't remember anyone I grew up with having one of those....;)

I always wanted one, but it was my brother who ended up getting one! I don’t remember if it didn’t work or if he didn’t want it, but I don’t remember seeing anything actually come out successfully.

Pro wrestling immediately came to me, too.

For a brief period, several of my friends were big into it. I mostly feigned interest, just to feel part of the loop, but it didn't really do it for me and I watched only enough to get a sense of it. I'm little older than you, I recall mainly the Jesse Ventura/Adrian Adonis/Andre the Giant period.

Same here, I don't even remember anyone actually having/playing with pogs. I knew of them from ads and whatnot, but never played them. I wonder if somebody was trying really hard to make them a huge fad and it just didn't catch on or they just never made it to small town Iowa.

I never stayed in a hotel or rode on a plane until I was an adult. Our family didn't have the money to afford it. We went on 1 vacation a year (for 1 week) and we packed up the station wagon and slept in a tent in campgrounds. Most of our meals on vacations were cooked on a Coleman stove or an open fire.

I never saw the star wars movies until I was in college. Grew up on a farm by a small town with no movie theater. It wasn't until the VCR rental stores in the late 80's that I finally learned what Darth Vader was all about.

It's that. I knew guys in college from bigger towns that had been into it.

I never drove a stick-shift as a kid. My family got rid of their last manual transmission vehicle before I was old enough to drive. I drove tractors and four wheelers with manual transmissions, but never a car/truck. Still haven't either. I'm sure I'd be fine with a minimal amount of effort, but the opportunity never presented itself.

I've also never ridden a horse or a motorcycle. It's weird to say all three things as a farm kid.

Xennial here. Also grew up with only 5 channels on the farm. Add me to the pro wrestling discussion. So many buddies were obsessed with it, I never got into it because we couldn’t watch it. Parents also never let me have a Nintendo or any gaming system, had to get my fill at friends or cousins houses so I was always horrible and didn’t want to play cause I got my ass kicked in everything!! 30 minutes per day of Oregon trail is all I ever got to play.

Our cabin had cable so had to cram as much MTV or Nickelodeon pre teen/teen shows as I could in the 1 hour of tv time per day that I got on weekends during the summer while at the lake.

All in all I can’t complain, as I’m ok missing out on these as it meant my childhood and teen years were spent outside or off doing things.

This was exactly the same for us, but my cousin a mile down the road had Nintendo and Sega Genesis so I never felt like I really missed out.

Plus, once they bought a PC for business stuff, you could get almost all of the same games for PC too.

So weird that you bring this up. It must have been 35 or more years ago we were at a Christmas dinner and my godfather told us how he'd bought a shitload of pogs and was putting them in a safe deposit box because they were really going to be worth something someday. I hadn't thought about that in all these years until YESTERDAY and now see your post!

Are you me? This was my exact experience, with the addition of missing out on a lot of the movie quotes that everyone said back and forth to each other.

On a positive, I was never into the DX "suck it" chop because of it.

I got in on the movie quotes because on Saturdays my mom would let us rent a bunch of movies from the gas station.
