I am relistening to ADWD right now, and am just about through it. I thought I would strike up a discussion on what we think will happen, and particularly in the North.
We know that Jon is coming back, which frankly, I think we all suspected. The show has Jon just at the point where he is leaving to meet Ramsay, and member's of the Night's Watch have just assassinated him because of this and his strategy with the Wildlings.
Listening to them come through the wall Tormund has a few thousand men. He also trusts Jon, and although wary I think Jon has proven to him that he can be trusted. They have Giants, and Mammoths marching to come through at Eastwatch if memory serves. When Jon is resurrected he will have a sizable fighting force, and in addition, Stannis is at Winterfell. I don't see Jon coming back more Emo, I think he will be ******, and edgy like Beric is. (1)
With Petyr telling Sansa he has taken Moat Cailin, which they seem to gloss over in the show like, no biggie. I mean, Ramsay would be paniced. Anyway, (2)the released Sansa chapter has her trying to seduce the Falcon who is The Eyrie's Brandon Stark, kind of a swashbuckler, and in line to rule the Eyrie. I am more inclined to think that Sansa is able to manipulate Robyn, but I think the Eyrie marches on the North, but I think they go to the Dreadfort. Possibly with Brynden Blackfish. It would be refreshing to see a Stark do something intelligent.
(3)Bran is being used as a plot mover in the show, but I do not see him leaving the tree. I think that is a huge departure. I don't buy the being touched by the Night's King allows him in. I could be way off here, but I see him using Hodor as a tool to go back south and communicate with Jon, or whoever is in Winterfell. I mean, why would Brynden Rivers still be in that tree if he did not have to be, and their power is really the power of the Wierwood Trees/Old Gods. Why a door on the side of the Mountain? I think that part takes place at the wall, and he saves Meera. Also, (4)Bran will not see the Tower of Joy there is no heart tree, and is not how Jon's parentage will be revealed. I think Bran is a tool to get intel on the Night's King for Jon.
(5)I am really excited to read about Davos and his quest to find Rickon. If the Great Northern Conspiracy is true I think he already has him and is with Manderly's host. We have seen Sansa and now Rickon used to substitute for Jeyne Poole, and I do think Rickon returns. I actually think he has a better chance at Winterfell than Sansa.
The Walkers are coming though, and I think that they hit the wall right after the battle for Winterfell. (6)Somehow the walls comes down as well, and Winter hits Westeros. I don't think anyone will be left on the throne at King's Landing. I think the clash between Lannister/Martell and The Faith leaves King's Landing a waste.
(7)When Victarion gets to Mereen I think he becomes her paramour. Euron is eventually killed.
Just some thoughts.
1) I agree that I don't think Jon will be as emotional as they are making him seem on the show. I am mid-way through my second time through of ADWD and I can't remember exactly the numbers they are talking, when it comes to Wildlings, Giants, Mammoths, Spearwives, etc. But it is definitely more impressive then they are making it seem in the book, which will be interesting to see when the battle eventually comes.
2)Yeah, I think people rip on the Sansa chapters because they seem too slow and not important, but although some might be slow (GRRM talking about why they need to leave the Eyrie for Winter) there is a big purpose for her. The marriage pact that Littlefinger has set up and the way Sansa is playing her game, is going to be fun to see play out.
3) I think Bran will not be as impact-ful as the show is making him seem, solely because of the fact that he cannot actually walk through time and space like he does in the show. But that being said, he can see throw crows, and people can hear him even if they just think it is their mind playing tricks (Theon's TWOW released chapter), so he can see a bit more than I think we believe he can when he is just in the Weirwoods. As for the Three-Eyed Crow I think, as he said in the show (and maybe the books? idk I haven't gotten to the part where I think he says it yet), that his purpose is to wait for Bran and he was going to stay in that tree until Bran came, so he can pass off Bran's bigger mission for the betterment of the Human Race. I also don't know what they are going to do with Hodor, but Bran warging in him all the way to the wall doesn't seem possible. Bran would warg into him, have to walk miles and miles a day, then warg out of him so he doesn't get lost in Hodor, once he leaves Hodor's conscious Hodor will be all alone in the Lands of Always Winter freaking out, cold, and hungry. I just don't know how Bran could do that. But who knows.
4) Agreed
5) Same, yes, just yes to all of this. Davos in the books are some of my favorite chapters, and I love the way Liam Cunningham has portrayed him in the show. Can't wait to see the resolution to his/Rickon's situation.
6) Winter is definitely coming, I'm assuming the Wall comes down, but I am curious to see how shortly after the Battle at Winterfell it happens. If the Others have any sense of what is happening south of the wall, in any way, they will definitely jump on that chance when the humans are fighting.
7) I am still very interested to see what happens with Victorian. I've always liked his chapters, and even more so as we got deeper into ADWD (and the released TWOW chapter) but I would be surprised if he became Dany's paramour, especially now with his red demon-hand haha. I also think Euron will not live to see his "plan" come to fruition, but by who and when is going to be interesting to see play out.
