Cykofan I agree 100% that marijuana is extremely helpful for cancer patients. I was not contending that at all and do believe it should be allowed for medicinal use. I was misunderstanding your intent then. I think we probably agree on most of this and apologies for not reading everything well.

Thanks Boxerdaddy- I agree that CG had his chances and blew it, and Fred did what he had to do. A real blow for the team but it gives somebody else the chance to step up.

Great to still see this kind of civility on the board. Kudos to you guys.

Well, in these situations, you just have to cut your losses with these types of players. There's no doubt about the potential and the future this guy had. He was playing really good ball down the stretch for us last year. When a 18 year old player makes a mistake, I understand that it is one mistake, but to make two more mistakes after the first one, it's time to move on. The game of basketball or the University of Iowa State was not as important as the marijuna that he smoked for the third time. At sone point I'm hoping Calvin looks back at this situation and learns from it. Coaching these guys and providing leadership to them on and off the court is extremely important. I know coach Hoiberg sat down and had a rather lengthy conversation last time (2nd offense). He chose to use the illigeal drug again and risked his future of playing basketball. It doesn't take a road scholar to figure out if you keep using it, you're going to get caught. I firmly believe that Hoiberg will be on the "Hot Seat" from here on out. There is way too much of this going on around the ISU bb program and the Iowa State basketball program is spiraling out of control. Fred needs to get this things fixed or else.

Again, our MBB program is a complete joke right now. No one can convince me otherwise until this ******* nonsense stops happening and we can actually win some games.

So sick of this.

There are ups and downs with all basketball programs, and anytime you're dealing with college age young men, a few are going to be stupid. Well actually most college age kids are going to be stupid and a few get caught. Fred is handling it and this does not make our program a joke. It was already a joke and Fred is in the process of fixing it.

Yeah cause ISU is the only place where BB players (or althletes for that matter)smoke weed and get drunk.

I really don't care that much about the minor off-the court stuff, as this happens everywhere, but our MBB program is a complete joke currently and will be such until we prove that we can fight our way out of the basement from a win/loss standpoint.

No it isn't. Right now, our basketball program is irrelevant. It has been for a few years. I don't believe it will be like that forever, but right now, believe me, people outside of Iowa don't really care all that much. Yeah, ESPN had a little blurb about it but I don't think the Nation is real concerned with a team that has been at the bottom of the Big 12 for the past few years.

Alright, Mr. Morality. Go take pictures of scantily clad women to calm your nerves.

Please quote the line in which I stated something inaccurate instead of making it personal. I know it's a lot to request bringing something with reality/substance to the conversation.

This has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with the constant revolving door our MBB has become. For one reason or another, we just can't stop hemrroging players. Period. Fact. Not disputable.

And it's turned our program (among other reasons) into a joke.

There's no morality in that - just simple facts. A cold reality that should prove Fred has no simple fix in front of him and turning this thing around is going to take time. I hope Fred has it in him.

I will be honest, I'm starting to think Freddy might be in over his head. Clearly lack of discipline...

I don't think anyone has said he isn't have they? Are you trying to tell me Fred would have been out of line to boot Railey? I think he made the right decision but I highly doubt anyone (including the AD) would have been up in arms about it.
No but people comparing Railey to Godfrey and Mann are missing the fact that Railey has screwed up twice, Mann once, and Godfrey 3 times.

When someone gets 3 strikes with marijuana, they are gone. It is not up to the coach no matter what sport it is. they are gone. CPR and Hoiberg have bioth shown they will not kick someone off the team for two strikes. They have shown they will follow the student athlete policy.

Or, you know, stupid kids. It isn't like Iowa State is the only school with these problems. Ferentz is clearly in over his head. Clearly a lack of discipline. Chizik was clearly in over his head when they won the Fulmer Cup last year. Chip Kelly's program at Oregon? Outta control. Awful discipline.

So what do you want him to do? Do you want him to rewrite policy or what? Name a kid that has been booted for their first offense DUI. The Mann thing is different and I am on the fence over that one but I think that was out of Fred's control. He can't control everyone. He can't constantly watch over all the guys. At some point they have to be held accountable for themselves which Godfrey has now been held accountable.

I realize we need talent, but it just seems like we are bringing in some questionable guys. At this point, what do we expect to change? Have we seen the end of this? Just seems like we have gone a little thuggish, which I'm not proud of!!!

Were Railey and Godfrey questionable guys when Fred brought them in? It was the transfers that had questionable pasts and they have stayed squeaky clean so far. Fact is most college age kids drink or smoke, sometimes for the first time in their lives, and that can occasionally lead to trouble. That's not Fred's fault. He can punish the kids and work with them to try to get them back on track, and if that doesn't work they have to go as in Godfrey's case. I wouldn't be surprised if Godfrey has finally learned his lesson and ends up being a nice contributor at another school (not in the Big 12). In fact I hope he does and I'm not going to label the kid a thug, but he has been pretty stupid to blow a great opportunity at ISU.

Except al of those programs are winning programs. ISU...not so much

Lack of discipline? How do you know? How much does Fred have to do so that players stays out of trouble? At some point, players HAVE to act like an adult and make smart decisions on their own. Obviously, he has done great job with transfer players.

The only questionable guy who has actually gotten in trouble is Godfrey. The rest have been just fine. Besides that, who was questionable in terms of the law? White is it isn't it? Yeah, Allen had issues with his former team but is that a really big deal? I don't think so, it happens all the time. Everyone makes this out to be a system problem when really it's a problem on individual kids basis. Railey messed up big one time. Godfrey is evidently not the quickest learner in the world. He has been removed, again, according to policy. This isn't Fred just overriding the system and doing whatever he wants. It's him following the policy he has to which is pretty generic across schools.

We knowingly bring in a guy caught with pot five times and dismiss a guy caught with pot 3 times. Again, why should we expect things to change? Sorry, I'm not just going to stick my head in the sand.
