Assume, not sure how I'm gonna get anything done at work after listening to that. I think we are shock some people this season.

Here's a fact: we lost a lot of people from a bad team. Temper the enthusiasm with a bit of reality.

We'll know for sure how good this team is on September 15. That's when we play UNI. We BARELY beat them last year, and they return almost their whole offense, while we lost most of ours.

What it seems that he is trying to do is show people that it is OK to have real expectations of winning. Gene expects to win, and soon. It's Ok for people to think that way, it really is the only way it happens.

I know that this group of fans has been trained forever to believe that we can't compete with the good teams. And in the past that was true as we had no budget, and horrible facilities. Now the budget isn't as big as some, but there is enough there to win with. We no longer have people in charge of the athletic department who look for reasons to fail, and excuses as to why it happens, and are willing to be held accountable. It's time for the fans to follow suit.

well said darts, couldn't agree more. i am tired of everyone expecting to lose, and am also ashamed to be part of this so called fan base. yes, we had a bad year last year. many teams have bad years. for us as fans to automatically say that we won't and even worse CAN'T bounce back is ridiculous. i for one expect better things. if we as a fanbase don't expect better, how will anyone else ever take us seriously?

I'd rather have an army of sheep lead by a lion than an army of lions lead by a sheep. I understand we were 4 plays from 0-12 but I also understand the power of confidence.

These are all opinions and my opinion is we are bowling this year with a 7-5 or 8-4 season with an upset other than Iowa which I think we win too.

I didn't know we had that much responsibility. Frankly I do expect big things from Chizik, just not this season. I guess I'm a bad fan, sorry team.

That's exactly what Jon's trying to get across. I don't agree with his 10-2 prediction, but I do think last season was a matter of a horrible schedule that shattered the team's confidence. Teams like Kansas beat us only because we'd already given up on the season. If the conference schedule was flipped around, last season would have been a completely different story!

We know about the personel losses this year, but something new is being added to this team for the coming season: swagger. Mental toughness. Attributes that make a difference between winning and losing games. We saw this going into the Nebraska game in 2005. Meyer and co. said during the entire week how much they wanted to be that ISU team who went into Lincoln and won there for the first time since the 70s. They damn near did it.

I don't think there's a problem with talent here, even though it's easily dismissed by the national media because we're not one of the big boys. I'll wait until the first game to judge how the team has come along, but I feel really good about the new coaching staff making an immediate impact.

I'm so tired of this line of thinking. Let's get this straight, no one on this site wants Iowa State to lose. But predicting a team that was 4-8 last year who lost both of their lines (which were already pretty bad) with a new coach and a new system to go 10-2 is not what we need. That will just set the stage for Chizik to "not live up to expectations" and fans getting frustrated.

Realistically, it makes no difference what the fans think this team's record will be...none at all. As long as they go to the games and cheer for their team, it's up to the players and coaches to put wins on the schedule. The team is not going to be better if I think we will win 10 games this year or if I think they will win 2.

Wow, funny, I didn't mention anything about a record.

Attitude, especially in the collision sport that is football, goes a long ways. We spent the last 29 years backing down from the big boys. How many times, when we went to Lincoln, etc. did we play scared, and get in a big hole early in the game. Hell the best team since 78, the 2000 Insight team, went to Manhattan and did the same thing, and got ***** slapped. KState ran up the score just to remind us that we were weak out of the gate against the big boys.

I fully expect us to be overmatched, physically, many times this year as Gene begins to fill the program with his players, and the off season conditioning program works its wonders. What I would be disappointed in seeing is that same deer in the headlights look that we have come to know.

I see all of these people on here talking about winning seasons and all that, World, and it makes me laugh sometimes, that is just fans being fans (I seem to recall some of you lamenting during the basketball season:wink:). I don't, and never have judged success based on just how many games you win, obviously it's very important, I just want to see my team compete, and feel like they are playing good, sound, fundemental football. And if they match up physically, and sometimes if they don't, have a great chance to win.

Narcisse is trying to be the Cyclones Jim Zabel. I'm certain it is designed to lure in more subscriptions.

Confidence only goes so far (I bet the rest of the Big 12 has a lot of confidence also)....this is largely the same team that was dead last in the country in pass defense, allowing over a 73 percent completion rate, a team that was 109th in yards per carry on offense at 2.8 and 111th in sacks allowed at 39, not to mention the loss of four starters from that line. Well you say, that can only help to replace those guys, but we're looking at starting three guys who have never played a snap of Big 12 football (1 is barely pushing 280 pounds, and another was a TE until four months ago.)

The JuCO guys may be loaded with talent, but even Tim Dobbins struggled until late in his first season and LaMarcus Hicks only played in nickel situations and both those guys are in the NFL...so it takes an adjustment time. And they were the few exceptions to the rest of the JuCo washouts (Jerry Gair and Josh Hargis anyone?) Don't expect them to immediately dominate the Big 12. I am of the opinion it doesn't do anybody any good to expect ISU to win 8 games. Just sit back and hope for improvement. That doesn't make you a bad fan.

I wonder how much Jon Narcisse actually follows football, if he spews this type of incoherent nonsense.

And Jon Miller, I look forward to hearing John Walters on your program to balance out the other Jon. Thanks for your consideration.

I wouldn't doubt that the rest of the Big 12 has confidence, but I'm just saying it's something we lacked last year. The right attitude will carry you a long ways, but if doubts start to settle in and take hold, it's a hard, hard thing to shake off. It's not like we played with a chip on our shoulder all last year, and just couldn't win because we didn't have the talent. The talent was there, the schedule just took a stranglehold on the team and wore them out too early. On paper, ISU should have beaten KU, KSU, and maybe CU. (And I say maybe, because CU was a better team than their record indicated last year.)

In fact, CU is a prime example of how a poor loss can affect the rest of the season.

With a similar schedule this year, the same thing could happen, but there's a different feeling. Mac's teams, too often, would get knocked down and stay down, but Chizik has instilled an attitude where if you get knocked down, you just have to get back up.

Now is the time for positive delusions. We have a new coach and lots of Jucos who can fill the voids. Suppose we do have a bad season - should we lengthen the misery by having no hopes during the preseason?

Mr. Miller, you can't tell me that you didn't listen to the interview and not roll your eyes or even laugh out loud a few times. I enjoyed much pf the interview but had to jump start the BS-ometer to get through it. There's confidence and then there's delusion. I'm far to familiar with the latter being from Cedar Rapids.

I will make no predictions about where we end up at the end of the season, all I want to see, and this is something Chizik has talked about a lot already, is regardless of the score, the Clones play down to the last clock tick and leave it all on the field. I've only been to games for the last two years as a student and I already know too well the feeling of leaving JTS pissed off because the team just gave up when they were down in the 4th

He most certainly is and was an Iowa Hawkeye Fan.

His motivations with this piece are strictly financial. Pandering at its finest.

I respect all of your opinions, However, I really believe the Jonathon is a true Cyclone fan now. I've had a chance to read a lot of his blogs and insight on his site. He really does have some interesting points and views on what it takes to be successfull as a team and a player. He is really excited about this football team. He has met a lot of the players and attended a lot of the practices. He has seen first hand the changing of the gaurd and believes we are on the right track for success.
Why not applaud him for promoting ISU and trying to increase interest in ISU athletics.?

As for this season, We are basing a lot of our expectations on good coaching, good offseason conditioning, and a strong(winning) mentality. Only time will tell how far this can get us. Maybe Jonathon is right, put those expectations together and have players step up. That can be a recipe for a lot of success this year...

If we've learned nothing by history and the present, learn one thing.

People will do or say almost anything to make a buck.

Just sayin'...

Jon may be sincere, he may not be. I know one thing, I don't agree with his views about how close we were to being good last year and where he thinks we'll be this year. It'll be nice if he's right, though.
