I’m not sure that still adding a grad transfer after Spring practice bodes well for some of the returnees...unless it means that we have a really, really dynamic, explosive offense this fall.

Another adjustment to my Cyclone mindset that CMC may force me to make.

Please?

Outside of D Jones and Milton we have essentially freshmen who I know they are very high on but still freshmen..

Has zero to do with not liking depth.. guys get dinged up etc..

Jalen Martin is a Junior next year, if only he can fulfill expectations. But yeah, Butler leaving early has kind of messed up our class distribution. Who knew when you signed this two-star project he would leave for the NFL after his Junior season? Good problem to have I guess.

But Beyerball is right, we are counting on a lot of unknown freshmen to be great receivers. But maybe this means more balls thrown to the TE next season.

IMO, this is the biggest, and best, difference between Campbell and Rhoads.

Rhoads always seemed worried that guys would transfer if he recruited over them, but Campbell's philosophy is that he's going to bring in the best talent he can find, and if you want to see the field you're just going to have to up your game, or I guess you'll have to leave if you don't want to compete.
This is a really weird conclusion. I liked Paul—but he wasn’t really capable of “recruiting over” players, so I’m not sure where you get that idea. I’m sure he would have been overjoyed to recruit over someone—if his recruiting hadn’t just been barely scraping by as it was..

If I remember correctly, many of Rhoads' recruiting classes ranked right up in the same general area that CMC's have been, is that not correct?

But I don't think Rhoads developed guys at all.

Rhoads classes were generally in the 60s nationally (on 247 composite) while Campbell's have been in the 40s and 50s.

Rhoads classes were generally in the 60s nationally (on 247 composite) while Campbell's have been in the 40s and 50s.

Another way of putting it: In all of Rhoads' seasons, the average player rating for his recruiting classes, according to 247, ranged from 0.8126 (in 2011) to 0.8264 (in 2014). Campbell's first class in 2016 had an average player rating of 0.8249, which would have been the second best class of Rhodes' entire tenure. Since then the average player rating was 0.8390 in 2017, 0.8481 in 2018, and 0.8526 in 2019.

It is also worth noting that Rhoads' 2014 class was the highest rated class in school history at the time. Therefore, Campbell has welcomed the school's highest rated class in each of the last three seasons with each freshmen class beating the previous classes' mark. Campbell's worst recruiting class, which came in his first season, is still Iowa State's fifth best class ever according to the 247 average player rating.

NOTE: 247's recruiting rankings go back to 1999. So they include Campbell, Rhoads, Chizik, and the second half of the McCarney era.

Thanks for that info, I was too lazy to look it up. That does really show the stark difference between Rhoads' recruiting and Campbell's. I didn't realize it was that big of a difference.

Big get! Was much more concerned about replacing Butler than Montgomery based on the internal options and this goes a long way to filling that void.
