I'm sure we were born many years apart, but here goes

Rave On - Buddy Holly

You love the Thunder - Jackson Browne

Life in the Fast Lane - Eagles

Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John

Layla - Eric Clapton

Rave on = best use of syncopation in a Rock song.

Vh1 loses all credibility with that list. Stairway isn't even on it. No Stairway? Denied!

No doubt... voted most popular song in music history. (Go figure, since it was never a top 40 hit when originally released)

It's not that is wasn't popular, it's just that it wasn't officially released as a single, so it wasn't eligible for the charts. Pretty sure I read somewhere that the band never liked the song despite it being arguably their most well known work. For my money, Rock & Roll is their best song. The late John Bonham at his best, excluding the virtually unknown Moby ****.

Sorry, as much as I love Zeppelin, AC/DC, etc. the best rock song has to be something from the Beatles. Don't care which one...just pick one.

Anyone who picks the Beatles ought to be shot, stabbed, poisoned, hung by the neck, have their guts ripped out with a rusty can opener and strung across the highway to be run over by a 100 dripping manure wagons, set their manure-wagon-run-over guts on fire, then roll them back up, stuff them back in your body and sew you up with a rusty pickax for a needle and for thread, a log chain that's been steeping in bat guano for a century and then be left on a desert island for your wounds to fester until you DIE!

Seriously, the Beatles? It can be argued that the Beatles never played rock. If the Beatles came out today would anyone consider them rock? What song of the Beatles' rocks with the possible exception of Back in the U.S.S.R.? The Beatles are easy listening, almost bubble gum, and ballads, not even rock ballads. I wanna hold your hand? Give me a break.

Can you tell I hate the Beatles? It comes from having a sister who played nothing but for 10 long years. Every time, you turned on the radio station there were 10 different Beatles songs playing. No sooner would one stop than another one would start. The Beatles, yeeeech!

Yeah, some of the beatles songs are straight pop songs.
But several are definatly rock songs and GOOD rock songs
For example:
Helter Skelter
Come Together
Revolution
Most of the white album

More..............

Heard it Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye

Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

Shelter of Your love - Eric Clapton

Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin' On- Jerry Lee Lewis
Great Balls Of Fire

There have been so many great ones

I think Heard it Through the Grapevine is probably my nominee for all time best.

Just because the Beatles didn't play hard rock or heavy metal doesn't mean it isn't rock and roll. If you don't think the Beatles played rock and roll, you don't understand too much about where rock and roll came from, or have a really limited definition of it...

I was around when rock was born. I think I know what it is. Rock 'n' roll is a completely different thing. The question was greatest ROCK song ever. The Beatles never played much rock if any; they played rock 'n' roll, if you want to call it that. I still say a lot of their songs would have been considered bubble gum a generation or two later.

At least there's some people out there like me, who don't like the Beatles. They're too soft and quiet for me.

Saying the Beatles play rock is the same thing as saying The Captain and Tennille played rock in my book. Why hasn't someone nominated Muskrat Love for greatest rock song ever?
