I'm not going to get into predicting win totals for this year, but I think 4 or less is a bit pessimistic.
On the other hand, I hope we don't get to a point that we run a good coach out of town. CPR has said it himself, the hardest thing for him and his staff to do is find diamonds in the rough and do it successfully every time. A few prospects not panning out can be the difference between an 7-8 win season and a 5-6 win season for a team like ISU. And there's a big difference between a 7-8 win season and a 5-6 win season.
Maybe this won't be the year, but this coaching staff will have an 'off' year. They may even have 2 in a row. If we can stick behind a good coach thru that, they can rebound. If not, we might be hiring another Chizik.
Look at our neighbors to the east. They've had seasons that didn't live up to the pie-in-the-sky fan expectations. They even missed a bowl game in '07, but although some have wished for it, they haven't run captain Kirk out of town, and they're reaping the benefits from it. Are they world beaters? No, and I'd be the first to point out that they're paying KF a heck of a lot for the results they're getting, but they are hitting bowl games every year except 1 (disregarding the first 2 years), and hitting really good ones here and there. Would we accept winning a conference title one year then not making a bowl game 3 years later? I'll even grant that that scenario would be a lot bigger of a deal in the big 12 (winning conference title is harder), but I hope we wouldn't show CPR the door in that case. Jeezus I hate looking at Iowa stats, but there's a parallel: KF started 1-10, hit 11-2 in 4 years. 3 seasons over 10 wins, then 3 with 6-7 wins. Back up to 11-2 2 years after that, but back down to 8 and 7 after that.
Stability means something.
