I thought JP's quotes did a good job explaining why ISU uses search firms. at least he's open/outspoken about the process.

Typical head hunting fees are 10% of the new hires salary. How much is Campbell making? This seems well in line with this business. You just don't seem to understand it.

Not sure what industry you are in but I've been recruiting the crop input industry for 13 years and 90% of the recruiters I know charge between 25%-30% of first years base salary for contingent searches ans 30%-33% plus expenses for a retained search.

Expenses on retained searches typically include travel, meals, lodging, for recruiter(s), and potential candidates. Also, and may include advertising and probably personality assessments in cases but probably not in a college coach search.

"Pollard said Parker created a strategy that worked perfectly. Pollard camped out two blocks from Campbell's house. Once Toledo lost a game that sealed no MAC Championship Game bid, Iowa State was the first to speak with Campbell."

I picture some people on CF using this tactic to meet girls

Yeah, this is more in line with what I've heard. I think in the Ag industry it's really hard because of the connections everyone has and the desire to keep everything so quiet. That's a guess. I haven't really dealt with them other than a call every other month or so.

It's not hard to see how the bigger companies justify hiring someone just for that job, that's for sure.

Must be a coincidence that its the same search firm that found and hired Leath for ISU president....

Per diem for travel. that's likely a couple of flights and hotels, plus meals and daily expenses. These are not unusual. Everyone here just needs to get a big boy job so you can see this stuff in action.

Sounds great let me know when I can start my new 'big boy' job.

I'm surprised it wasn't more, really.

Even headhunters for accountants and engineers will get sometimes up to half of the first year's pay. And Campbell would make a fair deal more than that.

In 1976, Parker (Atlanta) came to me while I was working in Marshalltown(long story) for a promotional job in Louisiana. As I recall Parker got 35% of my first year salary. Obviously, they get more % on lesser paying jobs. I never met anyone with the firm. Everything was done on the phone, on my end of things.
