Great article about Hollywood Higgins. I always like when he refs our games because I know the game will be well officiated and under control. Didn't know he was 54. He looks a lot younger IMO

Yeah, he has his issues, but i'll take him over Eades\Whitehead any day.

I thought I remember someone stating he had a daughter than attended ISU, which is why at times he seemed to over compensate by making his 50/50 calls go against ISU. I could be wrong.

Re: Our favorite ref ...

I don't mind Higgins. Eades though, he is an absolute *****.

Why officials are allowed to ref that many games is beyond me. If the ncaa wants to regulate something it should be that.

How can you do that? If you regulate that you get less qualified officials making the game worse.

Honestly, the refs seem to be a way bigger issue when your team is average to good. I think there will always be bad calls, but better teams overcome them. I mainly hate to see games called differently on different ends of the floor, and sudden emphasis on things that are rarely called.

Depends what stage of life you're at. I wouldn't be interested if I had kids under 18.
Actually if all you had was a spouse, you could take her on a lot of trips and just spend airfare. With that many miles, he will be upgraded to first class.

He's filling the void that Ed Hightower left.

It has been years ago that I was having a friendly discussion with a Big10 fan and we both were saying we had the worst basketball referees. I decided to play my two aces and say that you can't have worse refs because we have Hightower and Bain. He laughed and said those were the refs he was thinking about, I didn't realize at the time they did both Big8 and Big10 games :)

It's beyond me why the NCAA doesn't just hire full-time referees, especially considering how much money they have at their disposal.

Refs don't want it. Would subject them to more taxes and take away all of their ability to make their own schedules.

Would it? I imagine they're stuck with self-employment taxes (i.e. the full 15.3% or whatever on Social Security, et al) now.
I'm just curious. It seems to me like Higgins takes in a ton of cash and probably sees a ton of it gone right off the top.

Is there any website that allows you to know who are the refs for a game? I'm trying to learn more about who is who, but if you miss the announcement during the TV broadcast, you can't know until it gets reported in the box score.

Blum, how about making a website with your scoring of refs?

Don't they stay in the same area close to home a lot though. ISU gets a lot of the same refs, so I just figured they were from near by. Higgins can do games in Ames, IC, at Kansas and Nebraska and be home at night saving a lot of travel expense

$3000 per game goes a long way when you live in Omaha and ref in Ames or Lawrence. Of course, he probably never travels directly from Omaha.

I believe that one happened at UNI. A memory I won't forgot.

Higgins was a ref for the UNI game at Bradley last night. Hard to think that one paid $3000. The gate receipts probably didn't total $3000!
