I wouldn't mind another home-and-away vs. decent P5/high-mid to complement the Missouri series. Helps to solidify 2018-19, could compensate for having to play Drake. I'd be fine w/ standalone neutral game vs. good opponent the next season, as an alternative.

Who ISU gets at home in Big 12/SEC is a factor, too. Puerto Rico Challenge isn't exactly loaded, winning it might help. Would be helpful to sweep Iowa/UNI, too.

Thats not alot of meat to the schedule then. Florida State and South Carolina seem to be the top teams in that tourney. Do we know if either will be as good next year?

Missouri is the worst Power 5 team in basketball, Iowa is a bubble team, UNI is another couple years of rebuilding away from contending in the Valley, and we will probably draw an Georgia/Alabama type team in the SEC challenge.

That isnt a non-conf resume thats going to help us come March next year.

If we were talking about this year, Id agree. However, next year we wont want to do that.

Next year we will need a lot of the top 150 or so games. We absolutely can't afford any 200+. It would also be nice to see the team get some experience against some of those teams in closer games.

Im guessing Iowa will be up next year, Missouri will be bad but better and it's on the road. SEC as a league seems to be on an upward trajectory. Get a game against an elite mid-major, ala Wichita or a San Diego State. Fill the rest with cupcakes.

i remember when the orlando tourney field was announced last year and everyone on fanatic thought it was so so at best. all it ended up with was a #1 seed (gonzaga), a s16 team in FL, and three more tourney teams in Seton Hall, Miam and us. it ended up being a great tournament.

Just skimming some teams and I think a potentially good home-and-home to get going this coming season (at Hilton ideally) would be Northwestern. Get the 2018 game on a Saturday and it could be a weekend in Chicago for Clone fans. Wildcats are very likely to be dancing again next year, they return almost everyone.

Again, it is not easy to get a home and home with power 5 schools. Lets all just assume that the coaches/staff try to get this. But they can't force anyone to do it.

As for next year, I think the non con is plenty hard right now for a team that is going to be young and lacking leadership from the start.

This is true. I didn't view it as negatively as some CF fans, it did end up being fairly strong. It looked better to me when it announced than Puerto Rico looks to me now, although it has similar makeup. I won't complain. I like these recent ones better than the non-bracketed formats.

BYU series was incredible. Might be too soon because of the double Ejim's to the crowd?
Liked the Virginia series we had.
Absolutely loved the Michigan series.
Ohio State wouldn't play us at Hilton so we had to play them in Des Moines so not them.
Cincinnati seems like a great series to continue.
I liked the Arkansas game at Hilton a couple years ago, that would be a good one.
I think it would be good to get some NE schools on the schedule too because he of our recruiting history. Maybe Uconn, Providence.

Yeah I dont think TJ wants a whole lot to do with ISU, considering how we handled that coaching search and all.
TJ is still very pro ISU. He's a great guy.

It's worth consideration. Northwestern would jump at the chance at this point.

In general, I'm in favor of tougher opponents than this year's cupcakes. I don't think it gets the guys ready for the Big12 to play the Citadel, for example.

In the case of next year, I might be a little more open to low/mid majors though because you may be starting a freshman or two and it was hard, even with this year's "core 4" to get the chemistry right early on. We'll have guys just getting used to the college game. Not sure how the match-ups will be but that PR tourney could be brutal unless we get some good talent in to finalize the recruitng class.

My realistic balance between scheduling with some level of challenge, and what it’ll actually be. Roughly in expected schedule order. Assuming 13 games.

at Missouri
“Buy game” vs. SWAC/Southland
“Buy game” vs. MAAC/MEAC etc.
“Buy game” vs. MWC
Puerto Rico Tip-off (3 games)
vs. Power 5/High-mid (neutral or home-and-away) … ideally
Iowa
vs. UNI (Big 4 Classic)
“Buy game” vs. Big West/WAC
“Buy game” vs. ‘other’
Vanderbilt (Big 12/SEC Challenge) (my guess)

My predicted seeding for Tip-Off tournament:
1. Florida State
8. UTEP
4. Illinois State
5. Boise State
3. South Carolina
6. Tulsa
2. Iowa State
7. Western Michigan
